Cousins signs with Raiders
I don't love this. I get it, but I don't love it.

Not so sure, and "I won't get fooled again"!...but I hope you're right.BoKnows81 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 9:29 am Not 2 out of 53. Kubiak wont be running the defense. Regardless, the only two that really matter that need to know Kubiak's system are the QBs. And the top 2 already do. Mendoza is rhythm passer who can run play-action, operate on the move, and take advantage of defined reads. Seamless transition. And Kirk has played under Kubiak in Minnesota. Jeanty, the O line and the WRs will be fine. In fact, they should excel.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that earlier in this thread you were totally against the Cousins acquisition, right?

As a backup, I am absolutely not against the signing bc he's an upgrade over AOC. What I am against is him being a pointless, likely 4 game bridge/week 1 starter. I thought I've made myself pretty clear on that.raidersince63 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 9:40 am Not so sure, and "I won't get fooled again"!...but I hope you're right.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. I must've gotten you mixed up with *"I don't give a shit"*.BoKnows81 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 9:46 am As a backup, I am absolutely not against the signing bc he's an upgrade over AOC. Whether or not those apply it relay doesn’t matter at this stage. He’s clearly not going to be the face of the franchise, neither is Cousins.raidersince63 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 8:41 am My only problem with him, and I don't know if it's something that can be taught or not, is that he is slow footed and thus cannot extend plays and his "pocket awareness" is lacking.
I also agree with what people have been saying and it add up to the negative column: he’s expensive as QB3.
It’s not optimal to hang on to him at this point. The better play is to keep churning the lower end of the roster with QBs in mind rounds 5 through 7.

I tend to think he could fetch something in the range of a 5th round pick. Teams will consider that he’s functioned better than several veteran QB’s in the dumpster fire that has been the Raiders offense over the past three seasons.chucker wrote: Mon Apr 06, 2026 11:06 am I don't think O'Connell garners anything in trade other than potentially a conditional pick. If he were on a minimum salary then he might bring a little more, but he just doesn't have real value to a team IMO. The only real value would be if he were only a million bucks for the year. If he were released, I don't think he'd get $3.6 million on the open market.
I don't despise him as an NFL QB like some do, but he's a marginal player - that doesn't bring value in trade. I'll be happy to be wrong.

Off topic a bit, but since you brought it up, the O line coach no doubt will be a big asset moving forward, especially for our run game. Throw in we may have a couple rookies on the line from last year that we didn’t see near enough and we might have a little something.BoKnows81 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 9:29 am Not 2 out of 53. Back on topic, Cousins is a much better backup but I don’t think he will or should play a significant portion of the year. I wanna see Mendoza get in and run the offense, and the sooner the better.
Why not use that pick on a raw QB in the draft and avoid the contract?heavyD wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 10:33 am I tend to think he could fetch something in the range of a 5th round pick. No one, myself included, said or implied that he was.

Again, because we need help in other areas other than QB3.NewEraX25 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 10:40 am Why not use that pick on a raw QB in the draft and avoid the contract?

Then why bring it up? You don't think we need a QB2 and QB3?

Strictly speaking that is the optimal route to go.NewEraX25 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 10:40 am Why not use that pick on a raw QB in the draft and avoid the contract?

AOC's contract can easily be reworked...save the draft pick for areas of other needs.

He'll only be QB3 for one year though. If planned properly, he will be developed into QB2. They should definitely draft another QB in addition to Mendoza. Late round picks are gambles, so why not gamble on the most important position in sports. Especially if they exhibit developmental qualities.raidersince63 wrote: Tue Apr 07, 2026 10:49 am Again, because we need help in other areas other than QB3.

I didn’t bring it up in the sense you’re assigning.
I’m merely pointing out that at this stage AOC12 is what he is. I don’t see the Raiders investing a lot of time and effort in him when even Cousins has a shelf life.
Could he be a part of the future Raiders? Maybe, I just don’t see it.
The ironic part is if he could speed up his procsssing he would actually be good in Kubiak’s system. But good is IMO his ceiling if he could correct that. By the early look of it? Mendoza might play at a very high level as one of his best traits is his football IQ/processing. AOC12 isn’t likely to reach Mendoza’s ceiling.
