I would absolutely be mad if they hired him. It would be a massive disappointment since there are better candidates in the playoffs currently. Hiring McDaniel would be deja vu all over again with us settling.Oaktown Superman wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:36 am He’s not my first choice, but I wouldn’t be mad if they hired him.
Kubiak
LaFleur
McDermott
McDaniel
Webb
Shula
Maybe not in that exact order, but pert near. Kubiak is my first choice and the only one I’d truly be ecstatic about hiring. The others I wouldn’t be mad at, but not as enthused.

All these candidates have their warts, and there’s no guarantees of future success with any of them.BoKnows81 wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:43 am I would absolutely be mad if they hired him. McDermott has the best pedigree of any of them with 98 wins in 9 seasons in Buffalo, but I don’t think he’s an ideal fit with the Raiders. I wouldn’t be mad if they hired him, but I do think there’s better options out there.
McDaniel had the second ranked offense his second year in Miami, but was (IIRC) 22nd and 25th his last two seasons there. He can scheme an offense, but I think Tua hampered it.

So reading between the lines, are you saying McDaniel is a guy you may not want?BoKnows81 wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:30 am NO to Mike McDaniel

I don't know what the deal is with McDaniel but he keeps pulling himself out of consideration for jobs but that tells me there is definitely smoke around him. Is there fire, no one knows but something is up. Chargers have not announced the hire so I have a feeling he is in play somewhere

I’m genuinely curious as exactly how do these potential candidates view the Raiders job? Are they using the interview(s) to leverage for a better deal elsewhere as has been known to happen? Let’s face it, the amount of firings they’ve done has to leave a bitter taste in their mouthes.Attyla wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:49 am So reading between the lines, are you saying McDaniel is a guy you may not want?

Just a short couple of years ago most Raider fans were saying we had the wrong McDaniel(s) and we all wanted a young innovative coach like McDaniel. He would have been welcomed with open arms.
What a difference a season makes.
I’m neither in nor out on most any of the candidates as I am not a fly on the wall in any of the interviews. I just want the HC that will surround himself with the best coordinators

I would not want McDaniel as HC, but I would welcome him as OC (some guys just are not cut out to be a HC). He clearly has an innovative offensive mind. My worthless guess is that Webb is our first choice. If he rebukes us, I think we are getting a McDermott/Brady combo (not saying I want this).

I think this time there has to be some optimism with potential hires. Brady has been designated as being more involved in the hire. The Brady seal of approval is also a brand thing. So not only are they doing their full due diligence but also reputations are on the line so they are going to have carte blanche to set us up for success. Never underestimate the concept of pride. And Brady is a very proud man so he is also going to be patient because being right is also important to the brand.Oaktown Superman wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:53 am I’m genuinely curious as exactly how do these potential candidates view the Raiders job? Nobody appears to be considering which Head Coach 's offensive scheme would be better suited for Mendoza's abilities and strengths, which im sure Brady is focusing on when talking scheme and X's and O's with HC candidates.
McDaniel, Kubiak, and Mike LaFleur =
Shanahans tree- Scheme: wide-zone running scheme with heavy play-action passing, pre-snap motion, and versatile personnel usage.
Webb =
Sean Payton's scheme: offense draws from Parcells/West Coast roots but differs from the Shanahan/McVay emphasis on outside zone and motion.
Webb’s playing career (Giants/Jets/Bills, 2017–2022) was under Brian Daboll (Belichick/Saban tree), Webb would likely try & bring in Kliff Kingsbury or Daboll as OC since Webb has never called plays yet as an OC. Kingsbury Air raid system would not be suited to Mendozas strengths.... Brian Daboll’s offensive scheme, based on the Erhardt-Perkins system, is highly adaptable and emphasizes quick decision-making, precise rhythm throws, and high-percentage short-to-intermediate routes like slants and curls to get the ball out fast and exploit mismatches. It incorporates play-action passes and run-pass options (RPOs) built off a balanced run game, allowing for explosive plays while prioritizing efficiency and third-down conversions. The scheme molds to the quarterback’s strengths, as seen with Josh Allen in Buffalo (more deep shots and designed runs) versus Daniel Jones in New York (conservative, quick progressions focused on underneath efficiency). Dabols scheme is much better suited and more compatible with Mendozas strengths and abilities over Kliff kingsbury's offense.
Between Shanahans offensive scheme vs Sean Payton's West Coast scheme, one is better suited for Mendozas abilities and strengths.

Kubiak to me has the better scheme for Mendoza, that is just me but I like it better

It seems McDaniels and Webb offer the same type of secondary bonus for us.Oaktown Superman wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 8:00 am And what has Webb done exactly for ppl to want him? I’m not saying he’d fail, but why?
We are taking a coach from a rival, so we gain and they lose.
We can only go by what makes it to us about Webb because there isn't a lot to go by other than Nix didn't bust.
McDaniels is definitely a known commodity and if we got him, the Chargers lost both coordinators and currently don't have any.
The dream is we get someone that makes us a winner while negatively affecting the other.
For a first time HC you never know.
As a once HC you get labelled a retread.
Oddly this year 3 long-term successful coaches lost jobs, but we don't seem to be interested in those would be proven retreads.
There definitely seems to be a youth thing going on here.
McDaniels a known commodity OC guru.
Several never been HC OC guru's.
The future is unknown no matter how you slice it.
A true Al Davis special "I rather be right, than consistent".

Kubiak is my #1 but i dont mind Mcdaniel among the other options potentially. Hed be a big loss for the Chargers. I dont think Payton misses a beat if Webb leaves, and thats not meant as a dig on Webb

Was watching a Simmons podcast the other day and they all thought the Raider job was a good one to get, and I’ve been listening to these guys just killing the Raiders for years. I do think that there is a really good chance that Spytek and Brady have reset the perception of the team.Oaktown Superman wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:53 am I’m genuinely curious as exactly how do these potential candidates view the Raiders job? Maybe but lets be clear if everything else was the same but we were picking 7th with no path to a top young qb, the job is not near as attractive. Mendoza is the biggest factor which makes the job more attractive.Jeevo wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 8:51 am Was watching a Simmons podcast the other day and they all thought the Raider job was a good one to get, and I’ve been listening to these guys just killing the Raiders for years.
