Rogers and Grant... what do we have there?

Unread post by Raider_Dave »

I remember seeing something a couple weeks ago that Rogers in his first start had graded out as our best lineman. How has he done since that first start?
How did Grant do? Kyle Long was very complimentary of Grant yesterday.
Real question is... are we as bad, and as desperate for help on 0-line as we think we are, or was a lot of that just bad personnel discissions and coaching by Pete and his kid.
If Rogers and Grant can play, along with moving JPJ back to center, maybe the o-line isn't as needy as we think.
Obviously, we look for help, but maybe not a total overhaul.

Raiders generally have a young roster. The incoming coaches have their work cut out for them determining who is developing and who isnt making the cut. Last season has made it difficult to determine what was bad coaching vs bad talent.
Let's hope the GM after this season has a better understanding of that situation heading into free agency and the draft which will greatly influence the type of HC he's about to hire.

At least one can only hope...... But hey, it is the Raiders so maybe the GM has left all that up to boy wonder.

As stated in this thread, you draft players to play, either it be a few series each game, special teams or right out of the gate..
Carrol is to blame and probably one of many reasons he is gone…

If you draft a RG LG C or any other position, then play the player at that F’in position!
It’s ridiculous to see say a RG get switched to RT or vice versa, if that’s the case why didn’t you draft a RT?

I dunno. Don Mosebar was moved from guard to center. Lincoln Kennedy was a left guard and was shifted to tackle, Kevin Gogan played right tackle for three seasons before being moved to guard. Robert Gallery never became the dominant tackle that he was drafted to be but ended up being a solid guard.

I think what is being overlooked is who will be the offensive line coach and what will be the blocking scheme? It will be a very pivotal hire and after which he will need the players. This is why I am a proponent of raising QB's and buying OL's.

And I hope the O-Line coach is chosen by the new OC and the decision is based on the talent that is available to play the O-Line. Instead of pounding square pegs into round holes.

I would go for a right tackle in either the 2nd or 3rd round. Even without Parham there will still be heavy competition for the left guard spot.

Since we don't have a first I agree

We have Mendoza, that pick is already gone

4 OL drafted in the last 2 drafts. I would move Glaze inside, where his power might be better suited. Miller-Glaze-JPJ-Rogers-Grant. I would sign a tackle for $18-20M, an IOL for $9-10M as comp. I would resign Meredith as a reserve. Unless something fell in our laps, I would pass on drafting an OL this year. Develop the 4 young pieces we have via competition with the FA signees.

Wilmark, what are your thoughts on Hoosiers’ Center Pat Coogan? See that he transferred out of ND. Looks like he can be had somewhere late round, 5 to 7th. Not a star, good size, has a connection with the most important player in the draft. Reading that he’s an excellent locker room guy. Worth a flyer?

Raiderssince63 has mentioned him several times. He probably has some input.

As I recall? Solid but I don't recall him standing out. In a way that's a good thing. You don't want lineman's names being called ;)

All told he's escaping me at the moment.

See, I'm taking more OL if I was making the pics. We need talent and solid backups as well. If they haven't started or shined yet, there maybe a reason besides poor coaching. Can't leave that up to another coach and possible waste of a year in my opinion. Get more overall talent, even sign 1 or 2 FA's depending on positions and salary, then let them compete and figure it out. Either way, the trenches must be improved and we must be able to run the ball and not get our QB killed!

Nice. Looks he may be going from a 5th to 7th to a definite 5th, possible 4th. Seems an easy enough get with us having 3 4th rounders.

We know JPJ has had some concussion trouble talk reaching back into his Duck days. Plus some talk of there being a bit of a learning curve for playing Center in the pros.

From JPJ, “I think it’s for me it was mental. I mean like you got to know way more cuz in college like they can’t give you as much of the picture because like you got to go to sociology class you know,” Powers-Johnson said. “In the NFL they give you everything and it’s more mental. Being able to see things in a new different language like getting into the NFL is a new language like in college we were just like ‘Okay point to front side guy.’ That was it now it’s like ‘Okay we got rotation and we’re going to point the mic in this certain rotate.”

It wouldn’t be completely crazy to have him at Guard. Played 23 games as a Guard before taking over Center for 13 games his final year. (Btw, also played on the defensive line in high school and his freshman year.) It’s easier to replace Guard than Center mid-season. Which is good if he continues to have poor concussion/injury luck. He’s perfect as a guard. Has the personality for it.

All that to say, let’s make our new best friendo Mendo as comfortable as possible by drafting his Center.

We drafted a right tackle in the 3rd the last 2 draft. Glaze and Grant.
We also drafted JPJ in the 2nd, and Rodgers in the 3rd in the last two years.
We have not neglected the offensive line as some seem to claim.

It's a pov, you are right we drafted some, but we need proven.
We're so bad, we can't rely right now on unproven.
We are going to have our #1 QB, no time to guess.
We need givens.
What' we need to do is get several FA lineman and then if our drafted players outplay them in time, that is by design to.

Ben Johnson showed exactly what to do last year, you have to protect the franchise to win.

I'm not playing Fernando until we prove we're at least average upfront.

I'll even say this is when owners chime in if needed.

While we shit on the last several QB's that we had, it's been the oline/oc that has f[raiders_icon]cked them the most.
All were so much better with other teams.
We can totally ruin Mendoza with the shit we've done the past few years.
And you can bet his family and agent have talked about this.
