He's a strategist first and foremost. He has a specific brilliance if you will. A guy like Campbell, Tomlin, the Harbaughs etc are not bad coaches. They're good coaches. But it seems having a badass mind in regards to scheme is the best route to go. That doesn't mean they have zero leadership quality either. It also ensures that one half of your team doesn't have to play musical chairs when guys leave from promotion

None of the current crops of coaches are complete anything. All of them are combinations of strategy, energy and motivation leaders. Simplifying them into one area is just not accurate. The last complete rah rah guy was Pierce. He proved why it does not work. These guys are XO guys who have other skills and abilities

To me, McDaniels is a bit too quirky. Mike Leach was weird as well but he could command the sideline and lead. McDaniels is just f[raiders_icon]cking strange.

Football is still a violent collision sport. There is a certain type of personality that goes with the job. It's about managing men. Every successful coach shares that one trait. So yeah, we can simplify the basic prerequisite before vetting the other qualifications.

Pierce was as dumb as a pile of rocks and yes his wanna be Straight out of Compton schtick was annoying.

Of course McDaniels hung 70 points on Sean Payton.

Attyla wrote: Sat Jan 17, 2026 12:22 pm Mike is quirky and odd but he knows his stuff. He was put in a tough position with Tue as his guy and made the best of it. Nobody knows how well he held the locker room but he worked his way up from nothing to a HC in the league and did it pretty young. I would say if you would want him as your OC then you have to say he is a leader. You do not become an OC without that trait.

That said, I don't know that his quirkiness would resonate with an entire team. I think his pressers are funny as hell in an unintentional way..
Tua was there when he took the job. I’m thinking that means he thought he could be the guy. Don’t think he was forced on him.

I don't give a shit if the hc wears joggers, shorts, yoga pants, pegs his blue jeans, wears a muscle shirt, a wife beater or wears only a speedo. I also don't care how he talks or walks. I don't care what kind of coach he is or if he leads men. He can paint his face like a f[raiders_icon]cking clown and wear a different Halloween costume every week as long as he wins and leads this franchise to Superbowl titles

Oh to a large degree he was. McDaniel wanted the job and Tua was not going to be traded. You take the job, you get the guy. The Tua experiment was like watching the Titanic sink. And I am talking about the movie. I wanted my three hours back.

I had a couple of conversations with Mike Leach at booster events. He would roll up on you and start talking about apes and then the fall of the Ottoman Empire and then mumble something about his favorite truck stop breakfast as he walked away.

But watch his command of the room when he lectured about the Air Raid offense. His grasp of it was impressive.

McDaniel may dress a little goofy but our owner looks like he should be doing Life cereal commercials

That brings back memories along with Tootsie Roll commercials and Buy the World a Coke.

I just think the Raider gig is going to require gravitas amongst other things. It may be to big for someone like McDaniels.
