Carroll and John Schneider's first three drafts (2010-12) partial listing. This is how you get good fast in the NFL -- score with a bunch of your picks, esp. the high ones. Al Davis did this and it stocked the Raiders for years of success.
2012 1 1 15 15 Bruce Irvin DE West Virginia
2 2 15 47 Bobby Wagner LB Utah State
3 3 12 75 Russell Wilson QB Wisconsin
4 4 11 106 Robert Turbin RB Utah State

2011 1 1 25 25 James Carpenter T Alabama
2 3 11 75 John Moffitt G Wisconsin
3 4 2 99 K.J. Wright LB Mississippi State
4 4 10 107 Kris Durham WR Georgia
5 5 23 154 Richard Sherman DB Stanford
9 7 39 242 Malcolm Smith LB USC
2010 1 1 6 6 Russell Okung T Oklahoma State
2 1 14 14 Earl Thomas DB Texas
3 2 28 60 Golden Tate WR Notre Dame
4 4 13 111 Walter Thurmond DB Oregon
5 4 29 127 E.J. Wilson DE North Carolina
6 5 2 133 Kam Chancellor DB Virginia Tech

2025 NFL season: Ranking all 32 teams by watchability

Raiders clock in at 9....

Kind of like slowing down and looking at a car wreck I guess.....

9. Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders argument is very simple. The prime characters are extremely fun to watch. Geno Smith is a high-risk, high-reward quarterback who completes highly difficult passes (fifth in completion percentage over expectation last season, per NFL Next Gen Stats) in the face of oncoming pressure. Brock Bowers is a record-setting tight end who creates more after the catch than any other player at his position save for George Kittle. Ashton Jeanty is probably going to do some cool stuff. And Pete Carroll is out there chomping gum and tackling his own players during warmups.

The second part of the argument is that the defense might be really, really, really bad. With Christian Wilkins cut and Jakorian Bennett traded, the Raiders have now lost over 5,800 snaps from last season's defensive depth chart. A good passing game on offense plus an entirely unreliable defense spells all sorts of fireworks.

Don’t know where to put this. An article about the Raaaiiddeeerrss.

One of the more interesting sentences for me, ”Will this wind up feeling like Carroll’s first year in Seattle, when the team made 284 roster transactions in one season?”

Thanks for sharing. Great article... but by today's standards (like Xtwitter, Insta, FB, ect.) this is a novella and not an "article." That is to say, it's a LONG (er) article, but well worth the read. The part you quoted caught my eye as well; I had to read it twice to make sure I read it right. LOL. I particularly enjoyed the wrap-up:

“The great Al Davis,” says Kelly, “said, ‘In this league, you’re going to have to win different ways every week.’ No week is the same in this league. There’s going to be weeks where it’s going to be a knock-down, drag-out 13-10 game, and then there’s going to be another game that’s gonna be a shoot-out.” So what’s his vision for this Raiders group? “Very simple: Just win, baby!” says Kelly, not totally answering the question, but still definitely playing the hits.

Hahaha, laughed at “novella”. It’s a damn shame, but yeah, a nice long article is few and far between these days. And it being about the Raiders, that’s spotting a Bigfoot/unicorn territory.

Not many sports writers excel at this kind of writing that paints a picture and gives a feel for the real culture of the team beyond stats and Xs and Os. Even fewer publications are interested in publishing them. Good find.

Pete must be so annoyed about people talking about his age. Pretty sure Monday Night Football will talk about it the whole time.

They certainly will talk about Pete's age tonight as he turns 74 years young.

There's a lot of value in experience, and Pete has a ton of it, but I found something interesting. Of the 7 NFL new coaching hires this offseason, the average age of the other 6 coaches is 44.8 years old. In a time when just about every team is looking for a young up and comer, the Raiders went wildly against the grain. Is it working out so far? Raiders are 1-2, same record as the young guy everyone wanted in Ben Johnson, who we coincidentally play Sunday. A loss will put us at 1-3, not a great spot to be in honestly, and so far the eye test shows me a team that isn't ready to compete, but hopefully we can pull out the W at home (against a Bears team that hasn't looked great either).

Regardless, the 30 year age gap between the average coaching hire and who Spytek hired is going to be judged harshly if it doesn't work out.
