I feel the same. What makes the “best” coach has a lot to do with the team being coached. This is a rebuild. It’s going to be a young team as we fill the roster with (hopefully) good draft picks, and one of the most important picks being what we hope is our franchise quarterback.

Problem with a D-HC, is that he’ll need to make the OC a good one who can help mold our franchise QB, and if that goes well, bye bye OC. But if we have an O-HC, he’ll hire an OC that jibes with his O philosophy, and if that OC gets plucked away, the O-HC will hire another OC that jibes. Less instability for the new young QB in my opinion.

That argument goes the other way as well

A good QB can change with the system & also you have people in place below the OC that can step into his shoes

Get a good coaching staff around any HC or Co-ordinator & you don’t miss a beat

This is about getting the right coaching staff ni matter what side of the ball

Also having an OC that isn't the HC gives that OC more time with the QB

There are pro & cons both ways but as long as we get a good HC that can put together a staff i don't think we have to worry about losing guys

Some of the leagues best currently and all time developed under coaches who were not offensive coaches. I prefer offensive in general but it's not the only way

Kubiak and Minter are my top two as far as hopes for the team. I don't know enough about Davis Webb either way to form a proper opinion.

We’re all gonna have our predilections, but I imagine we’re all thankful that (so far) we haven’t lifted the lid to see a “retread” all set to “retool” floatin’ in the tank.

Davis webb has only coached a total of 2 years. He has not been a coordinator yet. To be honest its pretty far fetched to think a GM or an owner would put him in charge of their team with how inexperienced he is. But i would think everyone has heard of his competance and his high praise so people will interview him just to see what hes all about, and pick his brain, and will keep him on the radar for the future.. i wouldnt even trust him as the OC for a defensive head coach yet. But i would think it would be great experience for him to be OC under an offensive guru like Kubiak or even McDaniels would allow him to experience and learn even more since hes been under Sean Payton.

That’s my favorite possibility. Kubiak HC and Webb OC. But only if that’s what Kubiak would want of course. When it comes to the DC, our D is so bereft of talent and personality that I don’t even know what would be best for them.

MD does have a reputation for being trigger happy but every firing has been justified. I don't have a problem if we lose games as long as we can see progress towards a better future.

Are we doing the simple things right?
Do we look organised?
Is everyone playing with fire, passion, and intelligence?
Are the coaches putting our players in the best position to succeed?
Are the players developing?

When MD has fired someone it has been because the answers to those questions are a big, fat no. I'm sure our next head coach will be given leeway in terms of the W/L column as long as there are clear signs we are heading in the right direction.

Idk. There were a lot on here who wanted to jump on every retread available. I personally never understood it.

He's far more qualified than Antonio Pierce was... but considering hiring Pierce was a terrible idea, your point stands out even more lol

If Brady and Spytek see enough to hire him, I'll trust it. Seems like a long shot, but a potentially exciting move nonetheless.

Nor_Cal_Raider wrote: Tue Jan 20, 2026 7:10 pm Everyone keeps dogging mark, but he's brought in outside opinions for every hire outside of Gruden. I do think he has been try to get consistency in the organization, but we aren't the only team trying to get there.

And thats just it. Mark is responsible for every hire and fire outside DA who i believe was an RM guy and whoever this next HC will be.

Mark is the common denominator in all this. He keeps changing management when thing go astray.

2 coaches were hired that lasted more than 2 years. Both found ways to get to the playoffs. JDR built a team that made the playoffs in 3 years and Gruden in 3 years. Those 2 coaches were fired before they could build winning playoff teams.

The Raiders have been a 4 win team and GMs/HCs are given on average 2.1 years to turn the club around.

Thats not enough time.
Is it the coach? Or is it the time given to a coach to build a playoff winning team?

Every time a coach is fired its a rebuild and roster flop. Including a complete assistant coach flop.
We start from scratch again and again.

This shows a lack of confidence in direction in coaching that trickles down to the players that just learned the "new system".
Some players, AOC for example, have been in the league 3 years and had 3 OCs. Ridiculous.
Cant build a winner like this.

Mark is the #1 problem and my hope is Brady will curve marks impatience by standing between him and the team.
If a coach doesn't take a 4 win team to the playoffs in one year or doesn't show growth of a 4 win team, they are immediately canned and the cycle starts over.

Mark took over the team in 2011. 15years.
In that time the coachs were Hue, DA, JDR, Gruden, Pierce, McDaniels and Pete Carroll.
15 years ÷7 HCs = 2.1 years/HC

Mark needs to stop meddling and let people who actually know football handle things. Opinion

rich72 wrote: Tue Jan 20, 2026 8:50 pm So im thinking its going to be Kubiak, Lefluer, or Webb now. Chargers are going to be pretty dangerous with Harbaugh, McDaniels and Herbert. That kind of sucks for us.
There's a pretty good chance the Chargers lose Minter, which could have their D taking a step back. And it's not like Herbert has never had a good OC before - he had Kellen Moore, and their offense was still meh. Herbert has all the measureables, but might just end up being a coach killer over his career.
