Nicolas Cage is different. As a retired medic I can relate to every scene and Nicolas plays his character beautifully and accurately. Not all medics act this way but all medics know other medics who do lol.

I am looking forward to the movie but there is not an ounce of John Madden in Nicholas Cage's portrayal of him. Phillip Seymour Hoffman would have been a good choice. John Candy would have been perfect for the role.
However, Christian Bale looks like he knocking it out of the park as Al.
Should be a good watch.

I agree with Nick doing John. He didn't do anything noticeable that I've seen in mannerism and voice that John had, he sounds just like Nick Cage usually does.Reno Hightower wrote: Thu Sep 24, 2026 9:49 pm I am looking forward to the movie but there is not an ounce of John Madden in Nicholas Cage's portrayal of him. But I'm not agreeing Christian is knocking it out of the park, possibly in looks, but what I've seen is an over-emotional Al who likes getting loud and excited. That isn't the AL I know who was super calm and calculated with a bite to him, the best we got from him outside of SB speeches was that half fist wave/pump he would do. The trailers I've seen have him way over emotional and smiley, laughy.

Came to say this, except you and Reno Hightower said it better than I could. I am however glad that it is a big production with famous names, means it won't be a half hearted effort of a movie. Am also excited to see recreations and clips of on field action from the 70's glory teams.SkullCrusher wrote: Fri Sep 25, 2026 9:08 am I agree with Nick doing John. I heard Al could get fiery in his younger days and he had closer relationship's with his players in the 1970's as well. Al was still Al but his shadow and godfather persona didn't loom as large during that era as it did later.
I have only seen the previews so I am not sure how it will go over but I have always been a Christian Bale fan. John had an everyman appeal to him, and I am not sure Cage can capture that.
I recently watched "The Brink of War" where Jeff Daniels played Reagan. I never thought the guy that made Turbo Lax famous could pull it off and while he didn't really appear like Ronny, his mannerisms and personality win you over and half way through the movie you really don't care.
Maybe Cage can do the same.

It's an over the top comedy rather than a biopic.
Comedies are tough to pull off, but I'm optimistic lol

David O’Russell movies are probably best described as a “Dramedy”. Some lean harder in the Comedy direction than others, but certainly never anything approaching punchline/zinger. He did direct “The Fighter”. That one was solidly in the Drama category.Arsenal Raider wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 4:21 am It's an over the top comedy rather than a biopic.

I appreciate that the story of Madden is being directed by a guy whose films are connected to 26 Oscar noms and 3 wins. For a guy like Madden who is legend in Raider lore, Football, Broadcasting, Commercials, Video Games, Thanksgiving, and really the entirety of the American Sports landscape, it is soundly and justly deserved.

This movie is going to suck major ass. Bale doesn't look or act anything like Al Davis and Cage is/was a terrible, horrible choice to play John Madden. He doesn't look, sound or act anything like Madden. Hell for Bale for Al's role they don't even have Al's look right. The hair looks nothing like the way Al's used to look.
I wonder if some Al Davis and John Madden haters made this movie.

The main problem with the movie will be that most of the audiences will already know the real John Madden; and it almost impossible to get someone to play him…..Madden was unique
Probably should have been a nobody to play Madden; hope they show the landline telephone on the sideline where Al use to call the plays in….
