Possible AOC trade with Lions
I just got a message through my phone thru facebook that there may be interest in a Aidan O'Connell trade with the Lions. Don't know if true haven't seen anywhere else

Kirk is our redshirt starter. Hopefully he won’t start the whole season, and he may not make it through the whole season even if we wanted him to. He’s training wheels for Kubiak and Fernando, which is a fine role to have on a team like ours, but he isn’t really a true backup.
Fernando is the starter of the future, hopefully sooner rather than later. Fernando or bust.
That still leaves a role for AOC on the team. He’s our backup QB. In our current configuration, that makes him 3rd string. But Kirk is not a backup and will not be here long term, so when he leaves, there is room for AOC to graduate to our long term QB2 if he earns it.
That’s a valuable role to fill. Like I said, he has to earn it. But if the front office thinks there’s a real chance he will be that QB2 next year, I wouldn’t trade him just to trade him. At the right price, definitely say yes, but I wouldn’t be thrilled with a conditional 7th or something like that.
Again, that assumes the front office likes him — totally different story if they don’t think he’s worth anything. But Kubiak has gone out of his way to mention him, he’s all over Raider social media, and he did a good job with the reps that he’s gotten. My guess is they think he has a chance to earn that role, and I wouldn’t be in a rush to trade him if that’s the case

Ted is great at analysis but this is just speculation from a guy watching games. I do think O'Connell is a decent backup QB. I also wonder if the Raiders might be better off hanging onto him than cutting him, with a view that if Cousins looks ok but gets replaced by Mendoza prior to the trade deadline then you could trade Cousins to a good team with an injury and get out from under the 2027 guaranteed roster bonus.

Agree with all of this but there is on major issue. He’s in the final year of his contract and would have to agree to being a long term/career backup. Thats honestly his level, but he’s stated he wants a shot to win a starting role. So we’re most likely losing him this offseason. If you’re comfortable rolling with two QBs, it makes sense to trade him.Raiders Baby wrote: Mon Aug 24, 2026 11:39 am Kirk is our redshirt starter. Still think he's the future #2 for us. Thought it all along. I don't harbor the same feelings toward him the majority on here do. I consider him very serviceable for the role he plays now and has in the past. But, there is a price for everything.

I wouldn't turn down a draft pick just for the opportunity to re-sign him as a FA next offseason. He's also not nearly as cheap this year as he was in prior seasons. His salary isn't stupid, but it's actually quite high if he's just a #3 all year. None of his salary is guaranteed.raiderboyron wrote: Mon Aug 24, 2026 11:59 am Still think he's the future #2 for us. I don't think there's much of a chance that Cousins is still a Raider by the end of this season.

Good point. Don't know if I'd want him after learning a lot of this system, go to yet another system only to come back to this one tho. Shit fer brains would be all he has left.chucker wrote: Mon Aug 24, 2026 12:02 pm I wouldn't turn down a draft pick just for the opportunity to re-sign him as a FA next offseason. Yeah I say trade him while hes looking good in preseason. Hes on his last year of his contract and we could probably draft a qb to replace him for another 4 years on a rookie contract, plus we would save almost 4 million on the cap.

But who would be our #2 and/or #3 in the meantime? I mean we might trade AOC or KC this year but I doubt both.rich72 wrote: Mon Aug 24, 2026 12:39 pm Yeah I say trade him while hes looking good in preseason. Mendoza's #2, if Cousins goes down as fast as Rodgers did with the Jets...
"Well bub plans change in the NFL. We wanted to control this a bit better but welcome to the NFL."
"Enjoy the same treatment many other #1 pick QB's have over their careers."
