If you watched late night tv in the 70's (at least in So Cal) he was well know to you.

You had Worthington commercials. We had Earl Scheib.
It used to $29.95 in 1969, and he threw in some free metal work.

They still exist today. At one point, they were in over 20 states and in two other countries. He was a businessman who knew his shit. He manufactured his own paint so he was able to control the costs. But his claim of painting cars for 30 bucks (50 bucks later on) was a hook. That level of restoration was very basic with very basic colors. It was the add on's that made him the cash. The basic paint did not include things like inner panels or much attention to detail. The basic paints often bubbled or cracked. He pulled you in with the ads and hooked you with finer quality. Overall, he built a business model that many companies use today. Over promise and under deliver and even admit you will be sorry you got the basic level of service. And then upsell over and over again.

I am a pop culture magnet. I just love that shit. The more obscure the better. Cal Worthington was also a badass, flying almost 30 bombing missions over Germany. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and he was even given the award by Jimmy Doolittle. He later trained pilots who became astronauts. Seriously a badass.SkullCrusher wrote: Sat Aug 01, 2026 11:11 am Attyla you were AI before AI. You save people from googling. Doing the Metal Gods work!
As for the Metal God, it is one of rocks seriously strange stories. They were originally a Prog Rock band and early pictures of the band are strange indeed.

No leather, not attitude, just a rock band and at times a soft rock band...lol

In the 80`s several of my friends went the Earl Schieb route for the bare minimum paint job for their clunkers. If you were lucky, you might get 12 months out of a paint job before it began to peel lol

This^ exactly. If you had a beater that you couldn't sell because there were scratches, primer showing, and even rust, you had a low $ starting point so that you could sell said beater to someone else.Attyla wrote: Sat Aug 01, 2026 10:49 am They still exist today. Let's tip our hats to how poorly car bodies lasted back in the day.Opoponax50 wrote: Sat Aug 01, 2026 2:12 pm This^ exactly.
