Some people run towards danger, some people run from danger. Some players competitive juices don't start flowing until the action is live, others never really have competitive juices. Some players get (more intense) better and better as the game gets (going) more physical. Some people are Alphas, others who run from danger, avoid contact and such are betas…

The reason I could understand what he was saying from the get, is because I think like an ALPHA… Obviously so is he.

It will be good having him sit the bench and chomp at the bit, instead of having jitters in week 1 not knowing what to expect. If we had a for sure solid line I would want him out there starting more, but right now we have to see what we have. Get the line fixed, let him see how an old pro plays in the NFL, then throw him out there when hes ready. We dont want to take the chance of breaking him too early like we did Carr, he was always skittish in the pocket after taking a few good hits.

We dont even know what our o line is going to look like yet. Wait until they get it figured out then throw the inexperienced guy in there. Cousins may also play well, he deserves a chance to make a career comeback.
we do know that our oline upgraded big time with kolton miller coming back from injury and the addition of the top center in tyler lindenbaum (sp) and upgraded the oline coach

our oline will be much better this yr vs last yr

so going 0-4 then starting fernando means kubiak knows what he is doing ??? you do realize that injuries can happen and the oline could actually get worse as the season goes along, right

lol...nice contradiction in your 2 posts above...at first I thought you were somewhat ignorant of the game but I now believe you're simply trying to get attention. Regardless, I'll just go ahead make you my 3rd poster on ignore...carry on.

When to start him is very context dependent.

If it's midseason and we're 6-2 with Cousins, it would be unwise to suddenly put the rookie in. If we're 2-6, then Mendoza may as well get on the field. But what if the defense is giving up 30+ per game and the offense is averaging 27 ppg? What if the O is scoring 14 ppg while the D is only allowing 19 ppg?

Ultimately, it's going to depend on a number of intangible factors not a firm line where the kid's going to start at X point during the season no matter what. IOW, a lot of it's going to be played by ear.

Yeah thats the thing, we have no idea what the teams going to look like yet, they should get it straightened out first, then put the rookie in. There are so many new things going on at once that they wont have time to focus on teaching the new QB the ropes. Let him sit for a while and see how the rest of the team grasps all the new stuff first, then throw him in once the dust settles.

Doug is 100% correct. Mendoza needs to start week 1. Cousins starting 3-4 games does absolutely nothing. So crazy to me that after the last 20+ years, all you old heads on here still want to practice patience with this team. The future needs to start NOW.

I don't disagree.... and I'm an old head. I do think Cousins should start the season since we signed him to do just that. But... I don't disagree with you or others that see it the same way you do. I think Doza should sit a few games before he gets thrown into the fire. I think he needs to play the largest percentage of the games this next season. I think it's the best way for him to acclimate to the NFL game. If he takes a few big time hits along the way............. welcome to the NFL.

There are certain rookies and certain situations where i agree that rookie should sit. Mendoza is not one of those rookies and this is not one of those situations. Especially if he's been the best QB all offseason. Starting Cousins for 3-4 games is pointless and only delays the inevitable.

Matt Schaub never started a regular season game for the Raiders and he was acquired under similar circumstances. Cousins taking the snaps week one is not a forgone conclusion.

Since there's only one opinion that really matters, until Kubiak says otherwise, KC will be the opening day starter.

Schaub was shot. His arm was a noodle. Carr ended up the starter simply because he was the only viable option. Allen was not an offensive mind, so his focus was on building that rag tag team but with a poorly executed plan to fix the defense. It did not help that the old man had bankrupted the team in his final effort to field one last great team. We had almost not real picks due to Huey trading the farm for a QB and no cap space to work with. The fact that McKenzie was able to field a team at all is a minor miracle. Dear God we were a mess.

As for starting Mendoza or Cousins, it is a good debate and worthy of discussion. Obviously, we have no say but talking about it will fill some time between now and real news of note. Camp info will begin to pour in soon and that will liven stuff up with actual film and reports. I am curious to see what is next. Sure, I would like Mendoza to earn the job out of the gate, and I do think he is the guy who could do just that. But if Cousins starts the season, I think that is more a reflection of the line rather than the QB room. Mendoza is too cerebral not to master a complex playbook. I actually think he has already done so months ago. I think the only hiccup he will endure is mastering being under center but that is just time and effort, which he will have plenty of. Time to take off the training wheels and go for real. That said, I do think Cousins likely starts.

I really don't care if Mendoza starts the season under center or not. I can see both sides of the argument. It all depends on how ready the staff feels he is. If he is clearly looking the best then throw him in there. He isnt a wilting flower who will shrink under pressure. If he isnt ready it doesn't hurt a thing if Cousins starts the season. I don't see it stunting his development . He seems like a guy who will be learning all the time. He will be the starter soon enough.
I don't think our O line will be as bad as some do. Not thinking they are great by a long shot but not as bad as last season where nobody could succeed. I see a middle of the road line that won't get Mendoza killed
