Cousins signs with Raiders
I don't love this. I get it, but I don't love it.

It looks like we only pay him next year if he's on the roster, which I doubt he will be.Attyla wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:08 am 10M not to play for us next year. He got that deal because he is a good guy?

if I am reading this right, it is guaranteed, the rest we can ditch.Nor_Cal_Raider wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:28 am It looks like we only pay him next year if he's on the roster, which I doubt he will be.

It's a fully guaranteed roster bonus, so the Raiders will have to pay it if they cut him. If he gets traded prior to the bonus date then the new team would pay it. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a no-trade clause or provisions in the contract that simply make a trade highly unlikely because Cousins is shrewd enough to make sure he can double dip.Nor_Cal_Raider wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:28 am It looks like we only pay him next year if he's on the roster, which I doubt he will be.

Exactly. If we can trade him at the deadline, that $10 mill would be passed onto his new team. This is a $1.3 mill rental.Nor_Cal_Raider wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:28 am It looks like we only pay him next year if he's on the roster, which I doubt he will be.

I'm surprised Pittsburgh didn't go after Cousins instead of waiting till Moses comes off his mushroom mountain.

It's unlikely but possible that he'd get traded at the deadline. That would be ideal. IMO it's an $11.3 million rental with a relatively low chance of turning into a $1.3 million rental.NoThanksSir wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:32 am Exactly. I guess I have to trust Kubiak, Brady, Spytek etc to know more about QB development than me. What are the odds that they do? I don't believe this is a move designed to comPETE like the Geno Smith addition last year. I think this is just for the development path of Mendoza.

I doubt we can trade him. I actually floated the idea that we could trade Geno, but I don't see it with Cousins, given we will be dropping him and everyone knows it and that mammoth QB class next year.NoThanksSir wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:32 am Exactly. I remember Tom Brady saying he learned a lot from watching Bledsoe in the AFC championship game (after Brady was knocked out of the game) and he saw that Bledsoe played with a certain poise that Brady didn’t have yet.
And as well all know Brady didn’t start right away either.

He suggested a trade at the deadline - which is really the only time a trade is a real possibility IMO. To a team in contention that lost their starter for a while and needs a stopgap.Attyla wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:38 am I doubt we can trade him. Maybe it's a throw Cousins out there first to see how the line gels. Maybe let him get beat up to start out with while Mendoza gets to see the speed of the game.

Yep, and I'm comfortable with the full 11 mill because that means we have a high quality backup for Mendoza going into the second half of the season. I agree that this is all about Mendoza. The plan is for Mendoza to see the field in 2026. Cousins isn't good enough to keep him on the sidelines, but he can give us a battle tested veteran to take the hits while Kubiak stabilizes the OL.chucker wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:37 am It's unlikely but possible that he'd get traded at the deadline. Yep exactly. If a deal doesn't materialize at the deadline then he's paid his roster bonus and cut in 2027chucker wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:43 am He suggested a trade at the deadline - which is really the only time a trade is a real possibility IMO. I still don't see anyone trading for Kirk "take the money and run" Cousins.chucker wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 9:43 am He suggested a trade at the deadline - which is really the only time a trade is a real possibility IMO. To a team in contention that lost their starter for a while and needs a stopgap.
I will stop now, I hate this move and the freebie money we tossed away.
