The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Unread post by erickench »

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year. :cuss:

Yes. I think the offense can get going day one with a mostly vet oline of worth.
I dont want to wait for 4 young Olinemen to develop.
Sign 2 starting offensive lineman to 4 year contracts and draft the most talented OL with pur 2nd.
That gives us 3 vets and 2 guys developing.

Interesting how 2-4 turns it to 4 by default. Let me rephrase, we will draft 2+ offensive lineman regardless of what we do in FA.

I would go that way too. First get rid of the trash i.e. Crappa, Forsythe, etc. Then draft Blake Miller in the 2nd or 3rd round. And then sign a couple of free agents.

I agree 1 solid draft pick and 2 accomplished vets is the best and quickest path to success.
They souldn't wait 2 years to develop 6 linemen. Brock will be in y5 for goodness sake.
They need to come out of the gate firing on at least 7 cylinders.

If we do bring in another right tackle then grooming C. Grant to be K. Miller's replacement is in order.

Any guards that can be had via trade?

We have some extra picks to throw around?

I think we are going heavy on Offense in the Draft. I could see us get a QB, WR, OL maybe 2, RB on Offense, plus on Defense DT/NG, Safety, and another CB or 2.

You have to think Roger’s gets a good crack at a guard spot since was a 3rd rounder by Spytek..

I like Grant..FCS,but two sacks in three years or so is damn good.

Can he play right? Hope to see him over there competing this summer.

There is good competition for the final guard spot. There's Meredith, Rogers, and Mafi. I'm intrigued with Mafi because he was such an excellent runblocker in college. Rogers had a decent rookie season. Meredith's play was ruined by his move to center. In other years prior he was a reliable player.

Caleb Rogers played both guard and tackle spots and made 55 straight starts for Tech. 4 out of 5 line positions and staying healthy that long is impressive. He was also one of the most athletic lineman in the draft last year. His tape backed that up. The way he moves and the overall strength of his game is perfect for Kubiaks scheme. Klint mentioned him by name in a presser. That tells you a lot.

I think Meredith is great depth. He's shown he can be a solid guard. If Glaze doesn't win a spot he's good depth also. I think a tackle prospect is very worthwhile but the more I learn about Charles Grant the more I think he's gonna be good. His college scheme was the wide zone no less

Kolton is ideal for the wide zone. Linderbaum is the best zone blocking center in the NFL. JPJ played in a zone scheme at Oregon. Grant played in the wide zone at William & Mary & kicked ass with the reach/backside blocks. He was praised for his skill in that system. I don't think the Raiders could have drafted two better scheme fits for Kubiaks system than they did last year. That's a blessing for the Raiders. Don't think for one second that Spytek wasnt talking to Kubiak about the skill set of the linemen we already have for his system during the HC interview process

I would like them to sign either Zeitler on a 1 year deal or Teller on a 2 year deal, then draft Miller or Iheanachor. Signing one of those veteran guards would give us the flexibility of not rushing Rogers along. If Rogers is ready they would give us good insurance against JPJ missing more time. You would have a 3 way competition for ROT between Miller/Iheanachor, Grant and Glaze. That draft choice would also give us our eventual replacement of colton Miller. Our gameday 10 active roster linemen would be Colton Miller, JPJ, Linderbaum, Teller/Zeitler, Iheanachor/Miller, Grant, Rogers, Glaze, Meredith and either Mafi or Putnam. Not too shabby.

I think Zeitler is a no-brainer on a one or two year deal..still very good and be a good one to have around the young guards
