I like JT but I do think one interesting aspect of his evaluation is that he only watched Mendoza in Indiana's RPO heavy offense. He even alluded to Herbert who played in something very similar. But he also didn't watch or include any of the Cal tape in his evaluation, so I'm hopeful his criticisms of not seeing him going through progressions is just ignorance and not evidence that Mendoza is incapable of doing that. Because we do have that tape available, JT just hasn't watched it.Opoponax50 wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 10:21 am I really like this evaluation. It's important to set realistic expectations for any rookie QB. Teams are going to find and be able to exploit his weaknesses until he overcomes them. Carr had exactly that problem. Once he got figured out, he wasn't able to get over that hump. There's no doubt Mendoza's gong to struggle, so rather than expecting him to swoop in and start winning right away, he needs to be given every opportunity to get better and succeed.

Every prospect is going to have some weaknesses. My favorite thing about Mendoza is I have 0 doubt that whatever is maximum potential and skill development is, he will work like no other to reach it.

Well for the fist time in like ever, I hear a HC talking about a system. Almost as if the last decade of HCs didn't have one.

The last one was a defensive coach with an incumbent DC. Not defending anyone but context. Carroll was not going to be talking about an offensive system, and since the defensive system was already installed it makes some sense. Now Pierce, his system was RAAAAAIIIDDDERRRRS, and that was it. So Pierce was not going to talk about his system, he was yelling it.KillerRaider30 wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 12:46 pm Well for the fist time in like ever, I hear a HC talking about a system. I guess McDaniels had his Perkins and Gruden west coast system so im wrong.
Have you noticed Kubiak has almost no emotion during his presser? Like a silent killer.
Straight business.

I like that he doesn't say Mendoza can't do it. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. And I agree wholeheartedly with DanKD - Mendoza will work his ass off to get better in any aspect he needs to improve. He has the humility and the work ethic to know that he can improve, and actually do it. Kubiak and Brady might know a thing or two about it too.NoThanksSir wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 12:16 pm I like JT but I do think one interesting aspect of his evaluation is that he only watched Mendoza in Indiana's RPO heavy offense. Well, the optics are looking good. The staff is about what I wanted. I still want to see who our QB coach is, last I checked that has not been added. Free agency is vital to us right now. We have to spend big this year. Oline, and defense makes sense for us. And since we did not turn over the scouting dept that should get us some good evaluations. What is going to hurt us there is the lack of artificially inflated QB prospects. I would have liked to have seen more than two QBs drafted in the first round to push down some good prospects. I just don't think anyone is going to roll the dice on Nussmeier in the first. I know he had that abdominal issue that affected his year but he did not look good prior to that injury.KillerRaider30 wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 1:02 pm Bad is an understatement. Lol

I would think Simpson is going top 15 but if all things are considered, he should be a lower first rounder. His game vs Indiana was not great and his sample size is sketchy at best. There are those who see potential in him but I am not a "draft potential in the first round" person.

I just keep drinking the koolaid. It seems like most years the media tide turns against the consensus top pick due to prospect fatigue, but this year it feels like most are getting more acquainted with Mendoza and loving him even more.

It's specially true this year when there's absolutely no shadow of a doubt who the nr1 pick should be. No other QB with a 1st round skillset made this draft the least exciting ever for hyping at the top. Everyone and their uncle knows that the draft starts with the Jets at 2.chucker wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 2:00 pm I just keep drinking the koolaid. To me the Perkins system seems like it was a way to justify after the fact. In an era of the West Coast offense it felt like "hey guess what, we have a named system too!"KillerRaider30 wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 12:58 pm I guess McDaniels had his Perkins and Gruden west coast system so im wrong.

Agree, it was a non-system. It is pretty much the antithesis of West Coast offense. WCO describes the sub package, motion, and multiple concepts. Perkins is just "mesh." Whatever Belichick, Weis, and McDaniels were running were clearly a modernized hybrid of the two. It's also why Brady was the lynchpin in that entire dynasty. He was probably stifled by it, tbh. Could have had far better success with a legit Walsh disciple.Willmark wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 2:54 pm To me the Perkins system seems like it was a way to justify after the fact.
