I'm sure he can scheme and build a playbook and call plays. I think the point is that unlike so many so-called offensive geniuses, he's not just a scheme savant who can't also relate to people and lead men.

Not saying he couldn’t do that. But that & what I’m asking, is 100% completely different things. Night & day.Attyla wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 11:27 am As a former QB he memorized complex playbooks. I am sure he can assist in play design. I cannot imagine he has no say in the pass playbook design. You do not elevate to his level without some creativity.

Even if he's not the guy, we need the Broncos to lose asap.

Right. Which is what I said as well. Why I do like him as candidate so far. Quite a bit.chucker wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 11:33 am I'm sure he can scheme and build a playbook and call plays. I’m just asking if he is also known or talked about, as a guy who can be a Shanahan/Coen/McVey/Johnson type, who can be a high quality OC. That’d make me like him more &, probably put him over the top. If not, then possibly, I have a couple other candidates above him.

It was reported that he called plays in a preseason game last year and absolutely killed it. Personally I don't really care much for that story, since defenses aren't really schemed up much in preseason, but meh.MexicanHulk wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 11:45 am Right. He's the passing game coordinator for the Broncos - I'm sure he's developing plays as part of his job. I tend to value preparation as more important than scheme creativity. You can scheme whatever you want, but the preparation is what makes the execution good enough for the scheme to work.

But it kind of is. You asked a lot of questions but they boiled down to whether he has OC skills. And the answer is pretty simple to me. The OC designs a playbook. To know how to do that, you have to have spent time studying a playbook. Memorization of a playbook, unless you are a total goober, is the first step. And he has memorized some from different OCs as a QB. He does not elevate to his current position without design skills. And you do not work for that particular coach unless you excel at it. Context suggests yes, he is a guy who can do that. Calling plays and tendencies? That is why the QB has several voices in his ear each play. And Webb would have been skilled there as well. And you know these guys are in meetings discussing game calls every week. The fact that he has not done so does not mean anything to me. You work for that guy, you are already a proven commodity as evidenced by the number of teams talking to your guys.MexicanHulk wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 11:35 am Not saying he couldn’t do that. Do we know anything with certainty at this point? No, since we don't know how well any of these guys interviewed. Webb could have bombed for all we know. Hell he could have wowed us to the point where we just want to offer him the job now. And we will not know until a hire is made. That flesh out my answer a bit more?

Mentions Minter as a possibility because of Michigan connections and that Davis Webb is a legit candidate who could bring an experienced OC like Kingsburry or Daboll.

We might be here thinking "He good", fans were beyond tired of the new 1 and out Gang. (Loved when this was the Cheifs, max pain!)
Most caoches don't survive 1/2 what they went through there.
Steelers ownership will stick with you, but you never know a twist of fate and stretch of bad years and then they will be a team with a coaching carousel. None of this is in stone and is cyclical, they are ready for a shit decade or two any time.
But all fans will want deep playoff runs and SB wins quick enough once you are competitive and not doing either gets fans ancy fast.
Yup...and don't get me wrong, the Steelers hire and draft well but luck of the draw probably has something to do with it too. I mean only 3 coaches in the last 57 years? And how many times over the years have we hired a coach that we were initially confident that it was the right move only to be proven wrong time and time again?
Like I said, they are well run but are they really THAT damn good, to the point of having 3 different coaches averaged lasting nearly 20 years each? I don't think any team has ever done anything even close to that, and probably never will considering the current NFL demands/expectations on their management.

It fleshes out your answer, sure. But it’s still definitely different from what I asked. Cause the part you’ve fleshed out, is what was implied already &, known. So while you fleshed out your answer, it wasn’t what was specifically asked.Attyla wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 11:50 am But it kind of is. Although with your replies &, Chucker’s, the answer seems to be, he possibly isn’t seen as, or at least for now, not known to be that kind of OC type coach I was asking. So I appreciate the replies.
I still like him quite a bit. There’s obviously a lot that goes into every aspect of coaching &, he does seem like a great candidate

it's cool and all that the Steelers are so committed to their coaching hires, but because of that, they delayed the franchise by several years. they stayed on the Tomlin train way too long. After the third or fourth consecutive first round playoff exit and the same consistently ineffective offense, I would have moved on and started over. A rebuild may be out of their comfort zone though, which is why the delayed it for so long.

Fair, like I said you asked a lot of questions. The Broncos passing game is pretty tame over all, but that is the product of the guy they have. He is not a flashy QB. They also rush the ball very well. So, I think it boils down to, do you like the guy and does he have leadership skills. From what I gather, he is very well thought of among his teams. It is the leadership component that I am not as sure about.MexicanHulk wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 12:25 pm It fleshes out your answer, sure. But it’s still definitely different from what I asked. I'm under the impression that Davis Webb IS an X's/O's guy.
I don't see why Payton would have him calling plays in preseason if he weren't grooming him to be a play caller in the future.
Also that whole story about turning the car around and hiring him instantly, sounds like someone with intricate technical knowledge of the game.

Davis Webb intrigues me. My biggest question is will he attract and surround himself with the best and brightest?

Oh yeah, I’m with you on not putting too much blame on him for the Broncos passing game short comings. I think Bo Nix is solid but a heavily overrated QB. Especially coming into this season. I thinks it’s calmed down a bit as the season progressed. His receiving options aren’t that good either. There’s some talent to like there but overall not too great &, inexperienced. I think he’s helped make them look better than they actually are. At least that would be the hope if he’s hired here lolAttyla wrote: Fri Jan 16, 2026 12:43 pm Fair, like I said you asked a lot of questions.
