Kid is smart (and a winner). I'll take that over any intangible.

Thank you. I kept trying, but for some reason it kept going back to the Reddit link. Even when I try to open it just in YouTube it disappeared. It’s a great clip to understand his thinking.

Most NFL players wash out and do not succeed. That’s the nature of the business and being a meritocracy. That is to say nothing of NFL QBs.
Mendoza may or ma not make it but we 100% have to take the shot or we’re going nowhere.
Then again we are talking about a franchise that stuck with Boy Wonder hoping he would suddenly get it after almost ten years.
Not sure if that speaks more to us as a franchise, or our former QB. Likely both.

Thanks for posting it. Brady just has to love this kid. And you have to believe that whatever Brady suggests to him to help his development, Mendoza will be tireless in trying to get it done.Raidernation1979 wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 6:37 am Thank you. Its also about what you do around the QB. Good coaching is imperative and surrounding talent also very importantchucker wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 5:39 am It's absolutely possible that Mendoza's NFL career is meh or worse. A lack of arm strength isn't going to be the main reason. Ultimately it's what's between the ears that defines the level of QB success - having a gun for an arm or being a ridiculous athlete who can make a ton of plays with his legs can sometimes fill the gap in knowledge and experience for a while.
And Mendoza may not have an elite arm, but it's a very good arm - he can make all the throws you want to make. Like Joe Burrow. Most of a good QB's good play is pretty boring - find a weakness, spam it, don't get bored doing it over and over again.

This may be true.RI RAIDER wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 6:15 am Nobody knows dick about QB's (its been proven over time). I am just excited that we are finally taking a swing. If we trade the pick, I will loose it. Supposedly, the Rams went Mendoza bad. I hope we block their calls.
However, the Packers continue to get that position right every time they decide to switch QBs for the last 30–35 years.
Maybe that org is just lucky.

Will he throw at the combine? I think there is a good chance he might. I know the top guys tend to not throw and they end up doing their thing at the pro day, but I got a hunch Mendoza might buck that trend.

Them and San Fran from Montana to Young to Garcia. That said it’s likely a lot of things, but like the Steelers and head coaches they are an outlier.Be_Easy_25 wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 7:01 am This may be true.

Take the Browns they’ve cycled through something like 30 QBs since 2000 and even let go one they should have kept: Baker.
It’s an inexact science at best IMO.

It's almost uninteresting to discuss Mendoza's attributes. Without question he's going to be the first player taken in the draft, so it's the QB, OC, and O-line coaches who will ultimately determine his success with this team.
The only legit knock on the kid is that he's not a great athlete. However, when there's a gap to run through and no one is open, he can and will pick up the 3-5 yards necessary to keep drives going, which is something that will bite opposing defenses if they don't plan for it. In turn that will mean that receivers will have more opportunities to get/be open.

There are tons of QB's that have flamed out, doesn't matter measurables, it can happen.
Who would you suggest otherwise?
He actually does has the measurables, the smarts and dedication that makes him look easily like the best QB available.
Don't tell me we tanked to not draft a QB.
Arvell Reese, LB, OSU
Don't tell me QB Moore after last week.
Not that one week makes a decision, because you can use the whole season and it still comes up Mendoza.
No matter how you slice it, it comes up Mendoza.

There are plenty of guys who did not have "elite arm strength" but were successful. Brady, that one is obvious. But Montana did not either. Brees was not great in that area. Matt Ryan was average at best. Manning's arm on the deep passes was maybe a bit over average. Chad Pennington had a noodle but his career was derailed by bad coaching and injuries. Ironically, Pennington had a winning record overall and actually won a couple playoff games.SkullCrusher wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 8:35 am <cut>

I live ~ 60 minutes from Marshall University, so I watched Pennington in college and dude was the real deal, imo. As you said, he got injured and was never the same. I think he suffered two shoulder injuries to his right shoulder, his throwing shoulder. He wouldn’t have been elite, but I think he would’ve been good enough to get a team to the Super Bowl.Attyla wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 8:47 am There are plenty of guys who did not have "elite arm strength" but were successful.
