Supposedly, he lied to their faces about not transferring, and scared off a 5 star recruit who did not join Cal because he thought Mendoza was staying, and therefore would not be a starter. He then turned down a big NIL offer and went to Indiana.

I think there may be some sour grapes.
Interesting. I’ll bring that up next time I get together with him.

And so we get the #1 pick to then settle for 2nd round talent at QB? Mendoza is worth the shot and yes he doesn't have a monster arm and not elite wheels, the rest is elite and the two weaknesses he has he isn't weak in, this isn't all or nothing.
He really isn't though... Indiana has like, 7 4-star players on the roster, and then a multitude of 3-star and below players. It's a very well-coached team by someone who is excellent at getting the best out of their players...

Mendoza can make all the throws inside and outside of the numbers so I won't be looking for that when he plays Oregon this week.

-Ill be watching pocket awareness.

-Whether he can throw a strong accurate passes with a hand in his face under pressure. Carr threw up hospital balls or doubled over for a sack. Or a fumbled or threw an int. Lol sorry brrr

-His flat feet. God he has bad feet. Let's see how it effects his sudden movement needs.

-How he manipulates in the pocket. Does he step up? Can he move laterally and keep his shoulders square while in the pocket?

-Does he move the pocket? How he moves outside the pocket to buy himself and his 3rd progression more time.

-Top speed running at the 1st down sticks.

-Does he keep his head up when slides the pocket, and when he's in the pocket, and when he scrambles.

How long can he keep a passing rep alive.

When/if he panics

Can hee run his RPO heavy offense in the NFL. He has flat feet and he's slow by some measures. The NFL RPO is much different.

-His take off speed. When he pulls the ball and keeps it in the RPO particularly. He has big flat feet.

-His cadence. Can he draw a defense off sides.

-How he protects or holds the ball when looking down field.

Both QBs for that matter.

Good luck to them both and us. :pirateflag:

Xramfan wrote: Mon Jan 05, 2026 1:17 pm The debate continues. Last night I talked with an old friend who is in the Cal Bear press room and hasn't missed a Cal game home or away in person in over 30 years. He has interviewed every Cal player for decades. He is a Raider fan.

Having said that, he does not believe Mendo is worthy of the #1 pick. Says hes a great guy, very hard working and very intelligent but more of a product of Indianas line, receivers, scheme and coaching. Not sold on his arm strength. He would prefer trading down for a boatload of picks and grabbing a Beck or Chambliss in the 2nd or 3rd. This is NOT my take but just sharing anothers opinion.

I told him that if the Raiders pass on him, Mark would need 24 hour armed security lol.
I was a bit concerned about this myself. Cignetti is known for running a QB friendly system. So I went and watched his Cal highlights from last year. He did a lot of good stuff on a crappy Cal team also. Of course, highlights always look good.

I like that he’s smart and processes fast. Seems like he will be able to read defenses in the NFL and he eats blitzes for breakfast. Who was the last QB we had who performed better under pressure?

I don’t care if Moore might have some more physical ability, I want Mendoza for all the intangibles.

Yup!!! Intelligence. There is a massive vacuum of that in this organization. Mendoza has everything I want for rolling the dice to see if he can be a “franchise” QB.

I might be in the minority, well I know I am. But the value of that #1 pick overall, and the amount of players needed in the offensive line, I would, if I had any say, would explore every possibility of acquiring multiple picks.

I get it. I get it. I get it. QB driven league. Just have not been completely sold on Mendoza, especially with Manning at Texas? Or that dude from Oregon.

Who are the best available FA QB's, other than Geno. I would build the line, first.

Making up shit is your only go to move.
I didn't make up anything. AOC is top 5 in win percentage. Carr is 4th. That qualifies as, "one of the best win percentages".

What did I make up?

I would never pass up a franchise QB for any position group so I hope they do the exact opposite from your suggestions.

Well in the end it worked out for better for Cal because they got a star in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele
.... that's if he doesn't transfer

I get your point and in many ways you are correct.
But these players have all excelled making them the best versions they can be and now their stats/rankings would be a lot higher than then.

"Indiana ranks last (18th) in the Big Ten in talent, or 72nd nationally. OSU ranks 1st in the Big Ten, or 3rd nationally.
OSU has 11 five-stars and 56 four-stars compared to Indiana's 7 four-stars."

But some how today and when they were on the field vs OSU we didn't see OMG OSU monsters over puny IU, nope they looked their equal and one is simply playing better football now.

It is still great coaching prep and in-game, but they are now stacked as a team and playing lights out right now.
But your point is understood, on paper this wasn't supposed to happen.

Only thing you do first before OL is QB, you have to get that QB and you have to invest big time in the OL.

You can always get OL (doesn't mean teams always do this right) but you can, not saying a one year nothing to greatness fix, but you just constantly build that OL and guard against ever being bad there. We so failed here.

QB you get the one and you can go 10 years before drafting a replacement.
OL 5 guys that you assume you will replace more often than that.

We also have to be smart and not putting a franchise QB on the field just to get killed. That's how you destroy a QB's career before it ever starts. Walters.
