I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. I think he was clearly the better choice and we are seeing exactly that.RaiderandBulldog wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:29 pm Do you think Darnold would be as good on this team?
On the same Seattle team, Geno led the league in INT and took 50 sacks, so clearly under similar circumstances, Darnold is proving to be better, wouldn’t you agree?- These users gave a High Five to the author Corleone for the post:

This. I don't know why people can't grasp this simple concept. I preached this months ago and gave up bc people had their minds made up.Corleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:45 pm I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. I have to disagree with the same team part, 2/5 of the line are new starters and upgrades(center and guard) who both played together at NDSU. Zabel is a pure stud.Corleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:45 pm I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. Not sure how Darnold is cheaper. Maybe this year, but Darnold will be more expensive next year by about 7.5 mil. We can also get out of Geno's contract much easier than the Seahawks can with Darnold. Given our situation, I prefer taking the hit this year and having more cap available in 2026. We can get out of Geno's contract in two years with no cap hit, whereas Seattle would have 19.2 mil in dead cap if they want to move on in two years.Corleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:45 pm I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. I wouldn't agree that either has proven to be better at this point - it's still too small of a sample size, and too many variables, especially OL, to compare.
Until the OL is improved, it's going to be hard to evaluate the rest of the offense.

### 2025 Earnings Comparison
Geno Smith makes more money in 2025 than Sam Darnold. Based on contract details, Smith's total compensation for the year is approximately $50 million, while Darnold's is about $37.5 million. This gives Smith a clear edge in annual earnings for the current season.
- **Geno Smith (Las Vegas Raiders)**: $24 million base salary + $16 million roster bonus + $10.08 million workout bonus = **$50.08 million** total.
- **Sam Darnold (Seattle Seahawks)**: $5.3 million base salary + $32 million signing bonus (prorated but paid upfront) + $0.2 million workout bonus = **$37.5 million** total.
### Guaranteed Money Comparison
Geno Smith has more guaranteed money overall in his contract. Smith's deal includes $66.5 million in total guarantees (with $40 million fully guaranteed in 2025 alone), compared to Darnold's $55 million total (with $37.5 million fully guaranteed in 2025). Smith's structure provides greater long-term security, while Darnold's has more conditional elements beyond Year 1.
| Player | Total Contract Value | Total Guaranteed | 2025 Fully Guaranteed |
|--------------|----------------------|------------------|-----------------------|
| **Geno Smith** | $75M (2 years) | $66.5M | $40M |
| **Sam Darnold** | $100.5M (3 years) | $55M | $37.5M- These users gave a High Five to the author Corleone for the post:

I think they're both probably correct, and I don't think the two sets argue with each other. Here's where I got my information:Corleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 6:24 pm Is this info wrong?

I didn't want Darnold. Still don't think he was the right option for this team. Geno has his flaws but he's a lot better than this. O-line has to block better. Chip Kelly's play calling has been horrible.

Well, Spytek took zero 3rds and made them into two thirds. But they're not playing, and even inactive in at last two games, so, so far, the thirds aren't doing anything. But neither is Geno Carr.Corleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:45 pm I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. But Geno Carr had bad OL's and OC's in Seattle, too. Or so I was told.NoThanksSir wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 6:51 pm I didn't want Darnold. Still don't think he was the right option for this team. If you can give this bum 6 yearsBoKnows81 wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 2:40 pm There's plenty of tape on Geno to evaluate. This is EXACTLY what kind of a QB he is. Bad, average, elite line or not. He adds to the problems and will not win you games. Seattle knew that and that's why they let him walk.
You can give Geno more than 3 games
Plain and simple.

Darnold came to the league 5 years after Geno, but somehow has only 10 less starts.
Again, if you can give one guy 6 years of proven mediocrity, with a single good season, you can give the other guy more than 3 games.
Geno last 6 years

Darnold last 6 years

Different OC , different personnel, different OL coach & different OL scheme so not really the same but i guess it is the same in some people mindsCorleone wrote: Mon Sep 22, 2025 5:45 pm I think he’d be cheaper, wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick, is a younger player with more upside, coming off a great season. I have to commend Seattle because to get to where they are they with there OL they played the young guys & let them learn over the past few years
Said it a long time ago that neither was the right choice at QB, they’d be short term options, Geno was a vet who had found his rhythm late in his career & Darnold was a one season wonder who flunked out at multiple team before getting in the right system but both look a shadow of themselves the past few years
People complained for years about taking on season wonders & paying them so with Darnold behind our OL they’d still be complaining. He isn’t really playing at a level that would outplay our OL’s play, farnold has looked good against bad teams as has Smith given it is only 1 team for Smith
Until we sort our OL out we can’t evaluate anything on that offence. As of this season right now Jeanty, Bowers, Bech, JPJ, Mayer, Glaze, Thornton etc are all busts & everyone else isn't worth the paper there contract are written on

Last year Geno had that OC, had that personnel (most of it), had that OL coach and had that OL scheme. Are we forgetting that Geno played for the team that Darnold plays for now? With that team Geno led the league in INT, and took 50 sacks, while Seattle decided he wasn’t worth the extension he wanted and basically paid Darnold what it would have taken to keep Geno.CWood24 wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 12:34 am Different OC , different personnel, different OL coach & different OL scheme so not really the same but i guess it is the same in some people minds
The smarter franchise chose Darnold. The perpetual losers who’ve gone with Carr, Garoppolo, and Gardnew Minshew, chose Geno. We’ll certainly see it Seattle made the right choice by comparing what Darnold does this year vs what Geno gave them last year. I suspect they made the right choice, while the Raiders keep doing Raider things.
Hopefully we draft a QB next year.
