Music Trivia Thread

Unread post by Attyla »

I have been putting this in other threads, but am afraid I am just cluttering up those threads, so I will stop doing that and just do stuff in this one. Care to join in? I am all about learning more about music. So here we go.

Here are five artists from the UK who are really well known, and they had hits on both sides of the Atlantic, but had a lot more success in the US than in their home countries. There may be more and if you know one, feel free to join in.

First, we start with Ringo Starr of the Beatles. He had a lot of success as a solo artist in the US with a number of top 40 singles, far more in the US than in the UK. Songs like Photograph did quite well in the US, but not so much over seas

Second, Sheena Easton, she did well on both sides, but had a lot more success in the US with songs like Sugar Walls

Third, the Alan Parson's Project. They did OK in the UK but had a lot of success in the US, with songs like Games People Play

Next we have Steve Winwood who was quite successful as a solo artist, but much more so in the US

And finally, we have George Harrison, another Beatle. Had a lot of success as a solo artist in the US and was also a part of the Traveling Wilbury's.

You still mad bro? And no, I merely pointed out that I don't read replies that are wall of words. You got the case of red ass, and what happened next?

You went out of your way to seek and find a post where you think I did the same thing. But you fail to see the difference. Go fight your war with someone who gives a rats ass and let this thread return to its subject matter.

Damn, you are just an annoying pimple on my ass.

Dude, just shut the f[raiders_icon]ck up. My profanity is not anything that is because of you. Sorry your delicate ears cannot handle it. Jesus f[raiders_icon]cking Christ, I did not start this, I merely said I was not reading an opinion that is a huge f[raiders_icon]cking wall of words. You got your panties in a wad as a result

f[raiders_icon]ck, let this shit go, you are way behind on this one.

Oh, and I curse...a lot....if you cannot handle it, block my Motherf[raiders_icon]cking ass.

And red ass? That is when someone gets all caught up in shit because someone called their ass out. And that is what I have done repeatedly.

Go get a blowjob or something, because you are way to uptight for this place.

And BTW I never said I could not handle your profanity. Not once did I make a value judgement about your use of profanity. My posts were merely statements of fact that you were using profane language. And I was actually pointing it out for your benefit. Profanity is a manifestation of a feeble and discombobulated mind attempting to express itself forcefully. Surely you dont want to convey that impression about yourself. I'm sure you'll have another one of your witty and clever comebacks like, "Oh yeah, A-hole?", at the ready.
Nah, I am going to let you have the last word on this because I really don't give a f[raiders_icon]ck about you and want the thread to restore to intention. Because you obviously had to dig deep to make your "point"

And yea, bringing up my cursing, not once but repeatedly, that is triggering you.

Oh wait, I guess I did not let you have the last word. My bad..

If you could comprehend words, you would realize the only reason I brought up your profanity usage was to demonstrate that you were the one who needs the anger management intervention, despite your accusations to the contrary. I can make a referral for you for that if you'd like.

And stop trying to make me the escapegoat for the thread going offtrack. All I did was to say your post was too wordy to read. You've done the rest by making it personal.

PS
Congrats on getting your expletive count down to 1! I gave you a high-5 for that!
no, you are just to obtuse to understand the difference between what you did and the intention of this thread. Sorry but true. But since you cannot understand, i kinda feel sorry for you, And personal, you don't have the juice to get me personal.

Jesus

Let's move on from stupid shit

You might think you know what the song "For What It's Worth" is about. It's a protest song right? With its iconic opening verse "Stop, Children, what's that sound..." and the author known for his protesting in Steven Stills. It just has to be a protest song about the war, right? That would be a be negative. Stills wrote the song while a member of Buffalo Springfield, and it was not a protest song in the traditional sense. He was protesting a curfew. And not even a war time curfew. No, the residents living near and around Sunset Strip wanted to impose a curfew of 10PM on the bars and clubs because of the noise and congestion. That was it. Stills wanted to be able to party like a rock star on the strip and he did not want someone telling him when he had to stop. And the song has taken on a life of its own being misattributed to the war counter culture protests. It has found its way into Vietnam War movies giving legs to the urban legend. For his part, Stills has allowed it for the most unprotesting of reasons. Stills got paid.

We are the World. That brings back some painful memories. One of the most trite songs of the 80's with some of the biggest in pop music who gathered together to sing for charity. But there was one huge star absent during that recording.

That's right, a huge name was supposed to be there but ghosted the event to have some Mexican food. He was so big, they had a microphone separate of the others with tape on the floor with his name. And when he did not show up, MJ asked Kenny Loggins of all people who should claim his one solo line. And that is when the equally big at the time Huey Lewis stepped up to the mic and delivered his now iconic vocals.

Somewhere in LA that night, Prince was chowing down on authentic Mexican food and could not have cared less.

Davey Jones, better known as David Bowie saved a band? Yes, he most certainly did. Here is the story.

Bowie was already a rock star in his own right in 1972 but was about to blow up with his next upcoming album. But Bowie, who started in the late 60's was also a fan of a band that started around the same time. But that band had taken a course that was seeing them implode. Bowie did not want to see the band fail, but around that time they had decided to call it quits. Their bass player went so far as to inquire of Ziggy Stardust if they had an opening for him to gig with the star. But Bowie got the guys together and asked them to give it a bit longer, even promising to write and produce their next song and album. Sometimes that is all it takes, one guy believing in you. And sure enough, Bowie wrote one of their biggest songs early on in what would become a very long career even spanning the life of their savior. As a matter of fact, Mott the Hopple would still be gigging today if not for the lead singers hearing issues.

Oh and the song? All The Young Dudes off the album of the same name went to number three on the UK Singles Chart and number 37 in the US. It was also a hit in Canada. Lyrically, there was a violation of the laws in the UK at the time prohibiting advertising in songs with a line mentioning Marks and Sparks which is "Marks and Spencer" a retail establishment based in London. But other than that hiccup, it was the launching pad for the band and was performed live until 2019.

As for Bowie? His next move was to go Glam Rock and issued "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" and the rest is history. My Bowie fandom happened around 1977 with the issue of Heroes during his "Berlin" era. But what do I know?
