So what do Cass Elliot, Curzon Street and Harry Nilsson have to do with Keith Moon? Ah, the curse, is it real or fake?
Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas ventured out on her own toward the end of the groups run and she was traveling in Europe. She had a friend named Harry Nilsson, a prolific writer and performer (Everybody's Talkin is probably his biggest solo hit) who owned a little flat on Curzon Street, where he could be close to Apple Records for recording purposes. He loaned it out to Cass to stay for a few days. And yes, that is where she passed, and no it was not a ham sandwich that did her in. She was overweight and not taking care of herself so she had a heart attack. That was in 1974, and I remember it well. Flash forward four years later and Keith Moon was looking for a place to crash, Nilsson was reluctant to loan out the place to him, believing the place cursed. Pete Townsend convinced Harry to do the favor and sure enough, Keith Moon died in exactly the same place. Moon was a prolific drunk, but it was not the drink that did him in, it was clomethiazole ironically that he would overdose on. And what does that drug do? It assists in combating alcoholism. Irony in rock is a thing.
So is the flat on Curzon Street cursed? Townsend apparently does not think so, he bought it from Nilsson and as far as I know he owns it to this day. One man's curse is another man's home. As for the ham sandwich story? That is folklore stuff that was tossed around because the first doctor to get to the home saw a half eaten sandwich near her and jumped to a conclusion that has been debunked. The heart attack was the result of years of being overweight and crash diets and drugs that just weakened her heart. We lost a couple good one's there.

Speaking of Stevie Nicks, what does the Album Rumours, a dead drug dealer and a cult have to do with each other? Here's the story.
Fleetwood Mac, one of the hardest partying bands of the 70's, was so into cocaine that Stevie Nicks basically created a third nostril doing so much coke. And they were about to create one of the greatest albums of all times, Rumours. The band was doing so much coke, they planned to thank their drug dealer in the liner notes but he died before they finished the album. An original guitarist in the band, Jeremy Spencer left the band in 1971 to follow the cult "Children of God" which was about as creepy a group as you could find. This same cult included children who would go onto fame such as River Phoenix and Rose McGowan. No wonder those two were so messed up. But Spencer's departure opened the door for Lindsay Buckingham to join, but he had one firm demand, his girlfriend Stevie Nicks, who did not play an actual instrument, had to be included. Well we all know the story, Mick Fleetwood stooped Stevie, Christine McVie stooped one of the crew and pretty much the entire band stooped countless groupies. It was the 70's after all. And of course the relationships all went south fast. But that fueled the fires of creativity, coupled with a lot of coke and the rest is history. Of course the eventual breakup happened, which of course created reunion after reunion until the untimely death of Christine.
And what of Jeremy? He got his head straight and has produced music ever since, mainly instrumental music of late.
There is a lot of anger and hurt in this album, but I savor it to this day.
