They did make a trade of a couple first rounders for a strong safety..... that never seemed smart.
But Carroll had personnel control in Seattle, I don't think he'll have it with the Raiders. Spytek will want to help get Carroll what he thinks he needs but I think Spytek has the authority to do what the organization needs long term.
No, that did not work out, but that was not when he was building his team, but trying to extend its window.
And yes, he is not going to have that kind of authority here.
To me the only hot young assistant was ben Johnson. No one else fit the bill. Coen just didn't seem ready to me and all of his bouncing around the last few years concerned me. Plus, we dodged something like KK happening again. That whole thing with what went down with Jacksonville chaps my hide.
I think Joe Brady would have been a decent option too. But again, he’s used up to having a guy like Allen and we have no QB

Kevin O'Connell wasn't a hire that looked hot at the time and now he's regarded as one of the best in the game. The Vikings went for the low floor - high ceiling approach and hit the jackpot. Plenty of teams have busted with that approach with more heralded hires.

This will be a really good hire and just what the organisation needs right now. Things are looking up

Brady is more of a traditional kind of guy, but he is maybe the best in the league at calling plays. Always the right play at the right time. See a step a head and knows what the defense it going to do before they do.
Which I would love as a coach.

Most Viking fans hated the hire at the time too. They wanted Harbaugh and went ballistic when they didn't get him. DeMarco Ryan and Raheem Morris where at the top of the list, because they needed a defensive guy. A lot of who the hell is this guy? Doesn't McVey call the plays?

Also he was part of a terrible franchise that got turned around instead of coordinating an offense for a year of a team already contending for or recently winning a SB.
With him gone, getting someone who wont be overwhelmed by our suckitude and can change that is our best bet.

And I am sure Dufus will cut up his meat so he can eat it.
Please don't serve me the Kool-aid yet. I want to wallow in my Raider misery till free agency. Thanks ;-)

With Pete being a defensive guy, does anyone think Rob Leonard gets elevated to DC? Leonard was not granted any interviews by Raiders meaning they wanted to keep him in house. I wonder if that was the plan..

I'm fine with that. Sometimes things don't go as planned by no fault of your own. But moving forward and making the right decision is key. Rather than doubling down and forcing a mistake like Coen is what we would have done in the past. There's a reason Brady never even brought him in for an interview

A few thoughts after reading everyone else's:
1) Carroll will probably only be here the 3-4 years of his contract before retiring again, but that will be enough time to make us winners and install offensive and defensive systems and staffs that he can pass off to a designated successor.
2) Carroll's reputation as a coach, and his standing policy of never blocking assistants from leaving for better jobs, means his staff should be among the best in the league
3) Unlike the other old guy people were aiming for (Hoodie), Carroll has a record of success with multiple QBs including plucking Geno Smith (of all people) off the trash heap and turning him into a quality signal-caller.
I like this hire. I really do.
