None of us, including Mel f'n Kiper knows how good Mendoza will eventually turn out to be.

Could he be an another bust?...Yes. Could he end up being the Raiders Messiah?...yes.

We "don't know what we don't know".

No way. Not Lawrence the prospect at least.

Newton was a better athlete, but certainly not a better passer and definitely didn’t have anywhere near the intelligence

I feel he's comparable.

Caleb something happend at USC and his accuracy fell off and it's carried over. He's doing well enough, but he's not fully there yet.

Maye - Why can't Mendoza be this?

Daniels great rooking season, fell off, now needs to find his plateau, like Stroud.

He fits into the top 1/2 of QB's drafted in the first round over the past 10 years.

When it's all said and done there won't be a major weakness come draft time I predict, because there really isn't one.

I would agree. That QB class was a severe outlier. I don't even like Caleb Williams as a player but you can't deny he's a generational athlete at QB. All 3 of those guys from the 2024 draft are. Using them as an excuse not to draft Mendoza shows the dude in the clip was fishing for clicks.

I like Mendoza and hope he is the Raiders QB for the next 15 years and we win a few Superbowls before 2040.

Some stats on QBs taken at #1

Since 1970 28 QBs have been chosen at 1 - 55 Years of Data
-From 1970 to 2000 10 QBs taken #1
-From 2001 to 2025 18 QBs taken #1
-4 played for the Raiders and tried to trade for another (Elway)
-This will be 2nd time the Raiders have had the #1 pick in the Draft
-24 Made the Pro Bowl or 75% of this the QBs take at #1 since 1970. Take away Jamarcus, he should have never been the #1 pick and if Caleb, Bryce or Cam make a Pro Bowl this % will go up.
-12 of the 28 made a All Pro Team or 43%.
-All Pro 1st Team 2 (Peyton Manning and Cam Newton)
-All Pro 2nd Team 11(Bradshaw, Elway, Testaverde, Aikman, Vick, Palmer, Eli Manning, Newton, Peyton Manning)
-Playoffs: Number of QBs to the lead their team to the Playoffs. 22 out of the 28 or 79%
-Super Bowls: 14 of the 28 went to a Superbowl or 50%
-Superbowl Wins: 13 of the 28 or 46%

Teams with the most #1 Draft Pick since 1970
-Colts 7x
-Browns 7x
-Titans 6x
-Bills 6x
-Lions, 9ers,Bucs,Jets,Rams 5x
-Cardinals, Falcons, Pats, Panthers 4x

These are some interesting stats.

Side Notes:
-Last #1 Pick to win the Superbowl was Matthew Stafford. This means the 11 QBs taken since 2009 have not won a Superbowl with 3 of them making a Superbowl Appearance (Newton, Goff and Burrow

-My Observation and Opinion: The pick with the best arm talent in this group, Jeff George, never made All Pro, Pro Bowl and the playoffs. Arm Talent it not everything.

1970: Terry Bradshaw – Pittsburgh Steelers 3× Pro Bowl
1971: Jim Plunkett – New England Patriots
1975: Steve Bartkowski – Atlanta Falcons 2× Pro Bowl
1983: John Elway – Baltimore Colts 9× Pro Bowl
1987: Vinny Testaverde – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2× Pro Bowl
1989: Troy Aikman – Dallas Cowboys 6× Pro Bowl
1990: Jeff George – Indianapolis Colts
1993: Drew Bledsoe – New England Patriots 4× Pro Bowl
1998: Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts 14× Pro Bowl
1999: Tim Couch – Cleveland Browns
2001: Michael Vick – Atlanta Falcons 4× Pro Bowl
2002: David Carr – Houston Texans
2003: Carson Palmer – Cincinnati Bengals 3× Pro Bowl
2004: Eli Manning – San Diego Chargers 4× Pro Bowl
2005: Alex Smith – San Francisco 49ers 3× Pro Bowl
2007: JaMarcus Russell – Oakland Raiders
2009: Matthew Stafford – Detroit Lions 2x Pro Bowl
2010: Sam Bradford – St. Louis Rams
2011: Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers
2012: Andrew Luck – Indianapolis Colts 4x Pro Bowl
2015: Jameis Winston – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1× Pro Bowl
2016: Jared Goff – Los Angeles Rams 3× Pro Bowl
2018: Baker Mayfield – Cleveland Browns 1x Pro Bowl
2019: Kyler Murray – Arizona Cardinals 2× Pro Bowl
2020: Joe Burrow – Cincinnati Bengals 1× Pro Bowl
2021: Trevor Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars 1x Pro Bowl
2023: Bryce Young – Carolina Panthers
2024: Caleb Williams – Chicago Bears
2025: Cam Ward – Tennessee Titans

We "don't know what we don't know".
And that is why you keep swinging until you hit one out. I like our odds this time though. There is no other QB in this draft that makes me even a bit interested in a second swing. My hope is we ditch the three we got and venture into FA for a guy willing to mentor even if he is not a great QB in his own right. Tommy Devito comes to mind, seems a good guy. Mariota is not really that exciting to me but even Trubisky might do the trick. He is not great but he was a high pick so he understands the pressure that being the top dog brings.

For the backup/mentor you don’t need a great qb you need a good pro. To add to your list I would say Flacco or Winston.

Trubisky is the guy I would really like to have as a back up next year. When you listen to him talk now, he has matured so much and he just seems to get it.

Mcafee nailed it. His biggest weakness to me is sometimes he thinks he has more time than he does/completely misses a corner blitz. Those are very coachable and he seems to have improved in that area.

You don’t need a generational athlete at qb. You need a smart guy who can throw the ball to the right guy at the right time in the right place.

For the record Mendoza would have jumped on that fumble.

Is it wrong that I got wood?

He is just a x's and o's nerd and could talk all day about it. He definitely was going over the head of two fo the three guys there and even Urban reached a point where he was like that is too much analysis, we still must entertain.

Sounds a little different discussing plays than our last #1 QB pick.

If anyone in free agency understands the pressure of being the high pick with high expectations while also going to a team with talent questions, Trubisky would be that guy. He also can mentor a new head coach on how to coach a young QB on a team with questionable talent. The more I think about it, the better I like this option
