I’m one of those saying we should be drafting a QB early and one later each draft until we hit. Nothing else matters until we have a QB.

That said we also need to be smart about it while we should look at everyone our margin for error is small and we are horrible as a franchise at drafting and developing QBs.

Take this year, draft Dart in round 2 (don’t think he will be there- the Rams might snag him) and a QB later in the draft.

And if that doesn’t work? Keep looking and drafting.

We’ve seen the result decade after decade of the Raiders either neglecting to address the position or relying on finding a FA. A lot of that was a direct result of the old man; his experience taught him he could win a SB without drafting one. And when he did he drafted the same type of guy over and over again and had the same results. That should have ended two decades ago.
I agree..... I'm not sure on Dart, but that's just because I just don't know enough about him. But we need to keep taking shots at getting the long term QB. That's also why I'd love to trade down from the 6th pick if we can get value - so we can keep fortifying the rest of the team in the draft while potentially burning 1-2 picks a year on QB.
Rodgers drawing out his decision trying to ensure he creates as much drama as possible and leaves the team he doesn't pick with few options.
Another reason I'm glad he's not coming here. He's all about Aaron, all the time.

I'm probably wrong but I think I read that we can't even sign a contract with Genountil later today when he officially becomes a Raider.
You're not wrong.
So why are people wondering why we haven't signed him yet? For all we know the numbers have been agreed upon days ago.

And rant mode on (not at you):

Hell I’ve been banging that drum since the end of 2018. Would some/any of the guys I wanted panned out? That’s a nope or in some cases maybe.

It’s also not the point.

Us standing pat on a QB for almost a decade that did nothing to move the needle other than from pathetic to slightly mediocre has crippled this franchise.

At least by changing some of cogs we might have had a chance. Instead we paid boy wonder like a starter and got backup level play and the “brain trust” in the FO was scratching their asses wondering why it wasn’t working. Keep changing stuff except the QB? Maybe swap out the QB? Nahh let’s roll with him another five years when it was clear he wasn’t the guy in 2018.

Then to add insult to injury they keep changing the coach with the same shittastic results, bad drafting and no vision of what to do once we finally jettisoned Carr.

But Hell, it goes far past before Carr and his fans were even born. I outlined the old man above no need to rehash it again.

Bottom line is this franchise needs to start doing something different because what they had done for the better part of the last 4 decades has bordered on absurd if not down right pathetic. Likely both.

I swear a five year old with a speak and spell, a couple of juice boxes and blankie for nap time could have ran this franchise better since 1986 (outside of a few mirage years here and there.)

Rant mode off.

I could of course be proven wrong but Pete and Spytek are extremely competent so I am not worried about this.
So why are people wondering why we haven't signed him yet? For all we know the numbers have been agreed upon days ago.
Sometimes there's info out there prior to the date an agreement has been signed that the parties have agreed. This time there isn't. If the player's agent doesn't put the info out there then it's not gonna be out there. Some agents don't play that game so the info doesn't get leaked.

I'd be pretty surprised if they hadn't talked parameters of a contract. And, while some have suggested that it would just get handled by the agent, I'd be pretty surprised if Brady wasn't talking directly to Geno about it - because it's to the Raiders' advantage for Brady to talk to Geno. Does anyone think that Brady is going to pass up an opportunity to help the team? Does anyone think that Geno would decline a chat with Brady? It's not about "winning a contract negotiation", it's about optimizing cap space for other players so you can build the team.

Maybe swap out the QB? Nahh let’s roll with him another five years when it was clear he wasn’t the guy in 2018.
The problem was threefold:

1) Carr was inconsistent (especially after his 2017 broken leg) but when he was on, he was on. He could play like a HoFer for a quarter or two, or even a game or two at a time before coming back down to Earth.

2) He was well-liked by his teammates (the only teammate I remember him not getting along with was Crabtree, who famously didn't get along with anyone).

3) He had a never-ending parade of HCs and OCs during his time here, and was very good at saying and doing all the right things during the offseason and TC, both to the coaching staff and the media. This meant a steady stream of good press about how he was either going to turn the corner in Year 2 with his new scheme or was going to turn the corner with whatever new scheme the team had this year. He always looked like a guy who was just about to "get it" and start playing like an All-Pro consistently.

Finally, McDaniels and Ziegler wised up and dumped him, but not before giving him a truly stupid contract redo that ensured we'd get zero compensation when he took his talents to The Big Easy. And notice how it's the same story for him down there: The occasional great game or string of 2-3 great games mixed in with a lot of Meh or just plain bad play, and his constant reasurrances to everyone that he's just about to turn the corner. Whoever nicknamed him The Eternal Rookie should get a medal.

Anyway, back to our current QB situation: I like it. Smith, who was thoroughly chewed up and spat out by the NFL Hype Machine before reviving his career under Carroll, is uniquely qualified to shepherd a young talented QB through the inevitable rookie growing pains. He can tell the new guy, from a current player's perspective, what's important, what's not important, what to watch out for, etc.

Geno is a pretty high character guy, his first move as a Raider isn’t gonna be a nasty contract dispute. I’m sure it’s already been settled and it’s gonna be higher than some would like but honestly I don’t understand why some are acting like he’s a scrub? The numbers behind one of the worst lines in football rank him in the top half of the league, he should be paid accordingly.
