Carr had the same receiver in 2017 and was bad.
He also didn't get Cooper paid in Dallas - Cooper didn't get a new contract in Dallas until after he had put up better numbers in 1.5 seasons with Dak than he ever had with Carr. Either Dak got Cooper paid, or Cooper got Cooper paid. It wasn't Carr.
Can't we just wait and see how this goes? Only Hondo thinks Carr is a top 5 QB - every ranking I've seen has him 10-12 - that's not bad. Maybe after this season the views will change - I sure hope so because I'd love for him to win an MVP, because that would mean we had a damn good season.
I am not saying Derek Carr is a great QB but didn't he help Zay Jones get paid 3/30 million with Jaguars. Seth Roberts got a decent bump at 2 million with the Ravens.

He had better numbers with Josh Allen before he actually became an accurate QB. Maybe the Jags think that a better QB will make Zay look better? Kirk's numbers didn't justify his Jags deal either so it's hard to lean on those contracts as justification of anything.
Seth got paid less with the Ravens than he did with the Raiders - but he did have much better numbers with Carr. Seth was a decent player for the Raiders, who Reggie just overpaid for no apparent reason.
Why can't a great WR and defense propel Carr to MVP levels? Kupp and Donald did this to Stafford. Heck, Stafford couldn't be a MVP candidate with Megatron. He needed the defense as well. Confidence can make any QB play better. If Carr has success with Adams and not having a crappy RT, his confidence can blossom.
Sports psychology is a weird thing. I have seen a friend on a cross country team be the worst person on the team and then he got a girlfriend, got confidence and was the top runner at the end of the year. He went from running 32 minutes in a 5 mile race to running 26 minutes just because of confidence. Mentally knowing you have Adams instead of Zay Jones can really change the mentality of any QB.
Then we will have paid to carry above average to that end.
We won't have a top 3 slot, top 3 TE, top 3 WR1, and a strong 3rd, 4th in robinson/Edwards forever. That is literally the top WR group in the NFL.
This is currently possible right now for four reasons:
A) Carr is not making his 40 million yet.
B) Renfrow is not making his 15-17 million yet.
C) Waller is not making his 15-17 million yet.
D) The coaching staff is willing to start Parker and low tier players on our offensive line. Similar on the defensive interior, LBers, and CB group (so far).
So that offense already has to make up for huge gaps. Let alone after Carr, Waller, and Renfrow contracts by next season.
Noone has ever said Carr could not succeed with a Pro-Bowl offense. In fact, most have argued that is what it will take (See: Stafford and that Rams team this year). The point has always been that Pro-Bowl offenses are temporary and good luck getting a top 10 defense along with it.
Love the moves, but it is far from sustainable. That offense already needs to be top 5 at least to make up for the defense. Going to be hard with a barely improved offensive line.
I am giving it time, but it only gets more difficult in future seasons. Next season Carr gets 20 more, Adams 14 more, Renfrow 15 more, and Waller likely sees 8 more - we are already down 55 plus million just next season imo and that is just to keep what we have this year... This year will be fire though.
I think they can keep it rolling for a few years and I am behind it. A little funny money with cap increases locked in for the next three years is 100% possible.
Again though, Alex Smith put up huge numbers with amazing WRs also. He is still Alex Smith though - Carr will be the same story unless this is the coach that opens his eyes. We will see.
I am sure I could find Matthew Stafford or other HOF QB's that made horrible plays or decisions in a big game. Even the great Joe Montana had a horrible stretch of playoff games from 1985-1987 where he had 3 games, all loses, where he had 0 TD's and 4 INT. Joe Montana actually didn't hit his great playoffs years until he was 33 years old starting in 1988.
Kind of a weird way to say, yes, Derek actually did buckle under the pressure in the Cincy game
Don't forget Peyton Manning winning a Super Bowl where he went 12-for-23 for 141 yards and 1 INT and got sacked 5 times... with no TDs.... but hey, we all know it's ONLY the QB and every other position doesn't matter.
It is a team game, but our QB isn’t supposed to be ancient decrepit Peyton Manning. He’s supposed to be the f[raiders_icon]cking white mamba according to, well, himself.

Well Stafford doubled his TD total this year from his normal mid 20s numbers. So it’s possible.
Hopefully Carr can do the same with a better WR group and better overall offense.

His highest in touchdowns, yards, and average per catch. His average yards per catch with Carr was 18.7. His best season prior to that was 12.6. Aguilar got a 2 year 22 million dollar contract, after playing with Carr. He got Aguilar paid.
Another player is Michael Crabtree. He revived his career playing with Carr. He had his worse season prior to the Raiders, and then he had probably his best 3 seasons of his career playing with them. I could name more. Carr seems to get the best out of alot of recievers.

Jared Cook also had the best yards stats of his career as a Raider 2017-2018. Darren Waller is a completely different player and person as a Raider too. There is absolutely no denying what Waller has become as a Raider.
As long as we’re doing another thread, I’ll dive in and respond specifically to this topic.
Most Carr fans reference 2016 as some kind of annus mirabilis for a QB
I agree with much of what you wrote, but that is not why I'm responding.
Usually, adding a latin phrase gives a post some academic polish. In this particular cases, even theough I know what it means, it still reads to me as:
Carr was a miserable anus in 2016
Or more complimentary:
He was The Wonderful Anus in 2016

It's pretty stunning that the best reciever in the league chose to play with the quarterback alot of you consider an average bum. I think I'll lean on Adams and go with him on this one. He has first hand knowledge.
FYI, If it weren't for Derek Carr, Devante Adams would not be a Raider.
Did you see the Washington game in 2017? Prime time? That's when it all started to unravel.
Trump had just made his statements about kneeling for the anthem, "get that sonuvabitch off the field, he's FIRED" comments that same weekend. I believe the Washington game was either a SNF or MNF game. Teams all around the league had strong reactions, and it seemed to affect the Raiders in a way that affected team chemistry.
That's when Del Rio lost the locker room. There was a divide within the team, and after looking great the first couple of weeks, the Washington game is when the ball was being snapped early on multiple plays, no one seemed to be awake, and the team generally looked completely unrecognizable.
Shit happens. But to think in any way it's on Carr is pretty ridiculous. The TEAM wasn't the same the rest of that 2017 season.
I agree that this was a significant event in the team's demise from 2016, and with most of how you characterize it - except Carr's being blameless. At a very minimum, he did not support his teammate's protests, and there are reports he argued against them. I was never a big fan of the kneeling (although it didn't bother me much, either) and I will stay away from the politics, but this was absolutely the time and the place where a statement was appropriate, and a situation in which he needed to show his teammates that he had their back. He came up short, by all reports I have read.
I will add that I believe he learned from the experience.
He finished 3rd. MVP is never just about the numbers.
The injury happened, which cost them more than just Carr, it cost them potentially winning the division.
If the injury didn't happen, who knows? MVP was a definite possibility.
It never cost us the division it was gone already
Carr was a mile away from Ryan so no MVP wasnt a possibility he had played 15 full games already people
has seen the falsities in him
Carr has had No.1 WR since & done nothing
November-December time is when we see the real Carr who disappears like cake at a weight watchers meeting not the Kumbaya Carr we see early on who even then isn’t all that because he shits the bed in the first half of games
You are WRONG no matter what you say the facts say you are WRONG but it is par for the course with you guys
