The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft
Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year.

I’ll ask the question would drafting Membou, Banks or Booker instead of Jeanty have helped fix this line & given us more success?
I think the answer is unequivocally yes
People got way to caught up in the Jeanty was a generational talent narrative not realising like a few did that drafting a talent RB was a luxury pick when you have no line.
Jeanty is going to end up have a career like Barkely simply because we didn't fix our most glaring issues first & that's the trenches
Hindsight is a great thing but it was suggested that Booker, Banks or Membou might have made more sense for us, i’m a fix the trenches guy & wanted Mason Graham but OL wasn’t far behind

I’m still waiting for the post that explains the difference it makes with regards to whatever we may want or wanted.CWood24 wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 1:12 am I’ll ask the question would drafting Membou, Banks or Booker instead of Jeanty have helped fix this line & given us more success?

JPJ at center had Zamir White looking like an NFL RB.

...I don't think that people got caught up in anything g, as we all knew we needed line help, and that there were good ones to be had, but every year, many also complain about not taking the 'best player available' regard;less of position, and it was hard to argue with the pick in that respect. ....and I think what was more questionable, was what we did with the 2nd pick after having gone rb in the first.CWood24 wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 1:12 am I’ll ask the question would drafting Membou, Banks or Booker instead of Jeanty have helped fix this line & given us more success?

I think the OL was salvageable and this coaching staff made it worse. Arbitrarily changing guys positions doesn't help. Who knows if guys like Patrick Beckari wanted to come here, but simply keeping JPJ at Center, Parham at RG, and spending good money on a LG would have been fine. Historically shuffling player positions doesn't really work out. I don't think adding another rookie to a unit with two sophomore starters would have yielded significantly better results. We needed a legitimate veteran starter with experience and we signed Alex F'ing Cappa.

I was not too against Jeanty after Graham was gone, and to be honest I was a little worried about the O line players at the top of the draft. But like another poster (BoKnows I think) it was not getting O line in the second and third that cheesed me off.
Edit: yes I know we got two projects in the late 3rd but we had a high draft position before trades, so early second: road grader guard, early 3rd: BPA (not a slot receiver)

Here's the thing, we took Caleb Rogers in the 3rd. I'm willing to admit Bech isn't moving the needle on the bench and we should have drafted an OL there. But there's a good chance the results wouldn't be that different. Starting three guys no older than 23 would have been a struggle. I'm firm in my belief the major misstep is Cappa. It's clear they signed this guy with the intention of starting and that is still something I have a hard time reconciling.raider_kin wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 7:37 am Yes.

Yes,I am still hopeful for the late 3rd O linemen. I am also worried about JPJ. Can he play center? Can he stay healthy?NoThanksSir wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 7:46 am Here's the thing, we took Caleb Rogers in the 3rd. Caleb Rogers in the pics I saw of him at camp looked huge with an underdeveloped physique. I'm hopeful with time he'll grow into his frame and be a good player for us. JPJ is a very good center, though health is absolutely a concern.raider_kin wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 7:50 am Yes,I am still hopeful for the late 3rd O linemen. I am also worried about JPJ. People did get caught up in the generational talent stuff & it being the smart move,WNYRAIDER wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 6:59 am ...I don't think that people got caught up in anything g, as we all knew we needed line help, and that there were good ones to be had, but every year, many also complain about not taking the 'best player available' regard;less of position, and it was hard to argue with the pick in that respect. ....and I think what was more questionable, was what we did with the 2nd pick after having gone rb in the first.
Where we picked i was in on Mason Graham being a build the trenches guy but after he went i thought OL or DE should have been the move, i said that good RB’s could be had in the 2nd round & the generational talent bullshit was consistently thrown at me
I get the Jeanty pick he was a top 5 talent & if we build that line he’ll succeed but we weren’t built to put him in a place to succeed same with drafting a QB
Why can we question the Geno trade or the Bech pick but the Jeanty pick is supposedly untouchable subject

I'm sorry but I actually laughed out loud because in the other thread I'm sure I just read why can we question the Jeanty pick but not Geno lol. Fact is we lost back to back games by double digits, EVERYBODY is fair game and it's not irrational to second guess every single roster transaction this offseason considering the product. As the sample size grows hopefully we get some answers to these questions...CWood24 wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 8:55 am

Who is out there we could trade for or sign off a practice squad that could start is another question to be asked
Teven Jenkins screams out at me but he has injury issue but if healthy is a good OG who has played well at both spots
Outside of that i’m stuck maybe there is another Thomas Booker out there struggling for game time we could jump on

We need quick oline fixes and I'm now in 2026 and we need most positions to be filled with proven vets. If we draft a first rounder then they go right in slot, but anyone else reasonably takes time and that means not starting in '26, that's why we need vets. The non-blue chip lineman need training and build up. We're in too much of hurry to think mid-round rookies are really ready to go day one and you can't fake readiness on the oline.NoThanksSir wrote: Tue Sep 23, 2025 7:46 am Here's the thing, we took Caleb Rogers in the 3rd.
