Maybe Mark Davis is not as excited about Carr as we thought. This is from a Raiders site called Heavy.com so I’m not sure how accurate they are
Point of order, not sure where the 19 turnovers keeps coming from, it’s popped up a few times in this thread.

For 2021
23 TDs
14 INTS
13 Fumbles, 5 of which were recovered

So 22 total turnovers, one less than his passing TDS.
I spent most of my time here:
Franchise tag can be more expensive

As stated earlier, rarely do players make the full value of a contract. The average is 68%

That puts him at 28 million a year off a 40 million per year contract value. You may not be offering yourself flexibility or savings by tagging him. Tags are for players you are not sure you want to keep, guys you are “on the fence” with.
Fixed.

Also, the projected franchise tag for a quarterback in 2022 is $29.5M. I’ll check with my accountant, but just eyeballing it, seems less than $40M, as well as $35.5M.

Throwing a fully guaranteed contract at a player that’s about to hit FA is an act of desperation to buy time for negotiating an extension. Always was, always will be.

The offseason is finally here and the Las Vegas Raiders‘ biggest focus needs to be regarding what they plan to do with Derek Carr. The veteran quarterback is entering a contract year and wants an extension. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, new head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler like Carr, and plan to give him a new contract this offseason.

However, the situation might not be so simple. Owner Mark Davis isn’t known to meddle in football operations but Carr could be looking to get paid around $40 million per season. Considering the steep price, Davis will be closely involved in contract negotiations and he might not be entirely convinced Carr is worthy of getting paid like one of the five best quarterbacks in the NFL. According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, Davis and his closest advisors have a number in mind that they won’t cross in contract negotiations:

Here’s how you can plan for your 2022 financial goals in the new year.

I don’t know why Carr would take a shorter deal given the robust market for quarterbacks this offseason, but … maybe he is intrigued by working with Josh McDaniels, staying in Las Vegas and chasing the elusive playoff win.

Now, that’s going to cost the Raiders more per season than a longer deal would, likely more than $40 million a year for two or three seasons. Plus, they would have to beef up the $20 million he is due to make in 2022.

And that’s where owner Mark Davis, president Dan Ventrelle and senior vice president Tom Delaney come in. They are going to try to stay in the shadows on this, but I have a flashlight and there is definitely a financial number on Carr that they won’t go over.

Buckle up.

Throwing a fully guaranteed contract at a player that’s about to hit FA is an act of desperation to buy time for negotiating an extension. Always was, always will be.
It depends on the market value of the player. So not "always". It's an act of desperation if the player is Kamerion Wimbley, and the franchise tag is way more than his market value. It's not an act of desperation if the player is worth more on the open market than the tag. Some guys sign extensions, some play under the tag, some get traded under the tag, some just sign an extension or move on the next year. One size does not fit all.

Tag and trade is a viable option if you aren't committed to a player too - it's happened a fair bit in recent years.

Also I agree with your premise just the numbers weren’t right on his actual turnovers

this 68% of the contract thing does not ring true year to year. Workout bonuses and such are very small parts of a QB contract. If the contract is 40M per year, there is no way the actual money is 28M and the cap hit would still be 40M

Player Incentives:
$562,500 each ($2.5 million max) if he finishes top 5 in:
Passer Rating
Touchdown Passes
Pass Yards
Completion %
Yards per attempt
$500,000 if playoffs are made
$750,000 wild card round win
$1.25 million Divisional round win
$1.75 million Conference Championship win
$2.25 million Super Bowl win

Kirk Cousins is a 45 million cap hit this season.
Old Matt Ryan is a 48 million, followed by a 43 million cap hit.

Both teams are clearly SuperBowl contenders.
Paying average is a wonderful idea. There is zero chance they regret those moves.

This is our future. Untradable contracts.

How much of Carr's 125 million did he make?

The answer is 125 million (Cap hit which is what matters). Go add up the numbers, 125 million.

It’s my personal opinion that he’s not a good value above $30 million a year, but I’m known to be a little harsh on the golden calf.

I am sure more are coming.
