The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year. :cuss:

I also worry about his reliability at center due to his injury history, and guard is a far easier position to slot in a backup.
...I think that this (the injury concerns) is the bigger consideration at that position, in as much as, as was noted above about not necessarily drawing too many conclusions regarding jpj's ability, or lack of, to be able to handle the cerebral part of it, based on petes 'dipshit' son.

Maybe?

From what I've read and heard, one of the big gulfs between Spytek and Carroll was that our new draft picks weren't seeing the field, including the two IOLs we drafted in the third round.

The only thing we can be certain of is that we don't know anything more about the skills of our OL than we did at this time last year. Hell, maybe we don't even need to draft IOL this year, but we don't know that because our current guys either didn't play or they were so poorly coached that a realistic evaluation isn't possible.

Like an especially tenacious strain of gonorrhea, it's going to take more than one round of treatment to cure this problem.

I think we clearly saw that the rookies weren’t any worse than what we put out there all year. That tells me they should’ve been playing most of the year or a huge part of it rather than play washed up veterans.

Should we use our draft capital to move up into the late First and grab one of the tackles that are projected to be there?

I want these trenches built.

Maybe put one of those bed mattresses around his helmet. This kid brings versatility and tenacity. The worst position on this team for a young player was OL. Papa Pete was an egomaniac who obviously did not like the pups. To make matters worse, our OL coaching was fcking ass. I laugh at the rumor of him not being smart enough to handle the center position. I would still like to sign a Linderbaum but I really doubt the Ravens let him go. Maybe there is another center out there just to give us options. We are already ahead of the game with addition by subtraction (no wonder twin Carroll's, Parham, Cappa, and Putnam).
Yeah its good that JPJ is on his rookie contract because it doesnt cost much to keep him and see what happens. I hope we can do something with our O-line in the offseason because its our main weakness right now besides QB. Spytek should have personally fired Carrols kid at the beginning of this shitshow, strike 1 Spytek.

When you look at what Spytek was a part of in Tampa when it comes to how he might think about OL he seems like he’ll be a draft & develop kinda of guy

Now looking at the piece we do have he might want to build around them & not spend big on OL in FA maybe choosing to spend that cash elsewhere

JPJ could play C or RG depending on him communications issue being fixed

Rogers showed some promise at RG so could slot in there if JPJ play C

Grant showed some limited flashes at RT so why noy give him a shot with the long term plan of him moving back to LT kind of like Joe Alt has done

As for the left guard issue i’d love to draft a road grader like Vega Ioane whether we have to trade back up to get him or he lands with us in the 2nd

Would Miller, Draft Pick (Ioane), JPJ, Rogers & Grant be all that bad considering you can allow for bad play due to them being young & needing to develop also allowing your young OL to develop along with Mendoza or Moore

If you're referring to the consensus top 2 tackles, they will go in the top 10. So in that case, no. I do feel as though the next 3 picks should be used on a tackle, guard and WR, in no particular order. Free agency will play into this as well.

He really posted that this morning after last night's game? Wow.

Anyway, I think the line has to be fixed via free agency and/or this draft and not the 2nd year players that we have no idea if they can play bc of who drafted them. Start over, f[raiders_icon]ck it. I don't trust Pete's draft (aside from Jeanty).

....that would work......hopefully it has a chance to come together with all of the balls in the air until we get to that point.
...unless its just me, .it seems like there used to be more accomplished o line coaches in the league, and now it seems like coaches that make a name in that role are quickly elevated from it.

The line will be improved with better coaching. I would bring in 1 free agent IOL. My preference is a stalwart center and keep JPJ at guard. That alone will improve what is there as even the rookie guard looked solid.

You also have to draft on the lines continually. I’d be looking at coogan if we don’t bring in a FA center.

I prefer Mendoza & you prefer Mendoza but if Brady, Spytek & the new coaching staff prefer Moore then we’re drafting Moore & we have no say

At the moment neither has declared so it might be neither

Both have to be mentioned until we have one in the bag

No, this is a 1 QB draft. That was clearly evident last night. Moore isn't in the discussion anymore.
