The Off. Line - Complaints, Fixes, Questions, Draft

Unread post by erickench »

Mike Tice once said while coaching for the Raiders: “If you look at the offense like a fancy car, the offensive line is the engine. Even though we might have nice spinners and nice rims and tinted windows and some neat paint job, it doesn’t mean crap without the engine. If the engine’s not working, the car might look like a pretty nice car, but it’s a piece of crap.” And he was 100% right. I wish we had him back. Changes must be made on the O-line. Charles Grant is a very athletic lineman. We should give him some reps at right tackle. Bring back Powers-Johnson as the starter at center. Parham has got to go. Maybe we should consider moving Meredith back to guard. He did so well there last year. :cuss:

JPJ and Putnam are natural centers. Meredith and Crappa are not. That's the simple truth. I was expecting Meredith to play center this week but it looks like he's being phased out in favor of Crappa. I don't like it. Carroll is not treating the players fairly.

After QB. Definitely need to build a better than average Oline

100% yes. We’ve got a ton of money and I’d think at least 2 high-end starters on the line would be an absolute priority. In a perfect world, linderbaum and Braden Smith would be great. Pencil JPJ into a guard spot and maybe let the younger guys compete for the other starting guard spot.

The issue with JPJ at C was the same as it was in college getting his processing speed up to scratch with more complex plays & the schemes. We all know college is a different ball game to the pros as you can coast by on talent alone in college but you just can’t do that in the pros

There was also the rumour that he wasn’t calling the plays last year which might have some legs to him being moved to G

Him moving to G means he can just do what he does best which is mauling guys & moving them out the way

Mafi & Rogers are fine with me as developmental backups right now

I don’tt see the likes of Tyler Lindebaum & Braden Smth hitting FA so we may have to draft a RT in the 2nd depending on whether we are in position to get our QB

If we aren't in position to grab our QB then the like of Fano & Mauigoa would be great picks to build that OL

Was hoping JPJ would be the next Incognito, and if he can stay healthy he has a chance. Also need to play Grant and Rogers more, there’s no reason you can’t put them in on heavy sets. Get them used to the speed, practice isn’t the same as a game situation.
Need a couple veterans in FA and then draft your future Oline along with a coach who can properly bring them along. A coach that has good evaluation and teaching skills.
Seems you usually overpay in FA, would be nice to home grow a few through the draft on cheap contracts. I don’t think it can be overstated how much a solid Oline with proper coaching and placement would help this offense. In my mind it’s almost as important as getting the right Qb.

I think there's a decent chance that Linderbaum hits FA. The franchise tag isn't really in play for centers - it would be about $25 million, because there isn't a separate tag number for each oline position.

You have it wrong. It's

LT Miller
LG Mafi
C JPJ
RG Rogers
RT Grant

As college players Mafi and Rogers played left and right guard respectively

Grant isn’t beating out Glaze any time soon, especially because he’s never played on the right. Mafi shouldn’t be near the team either

...i'm never going to be the guy that wants to lose 'intentionally' for a higher pick, but it would not be a stretch to think that we likely will lose out, regardless.

....should that be the case, the nice thing this year appears to be that we can get a legit, potential 'franchise' QB. and without having to give up a boatload of other high picks to be in that position to do so, which is huge, and gives us a real chance to bolster the o line big time with that 2nd pick, and with, hopefully, a top free agent pick-up at that position. ...in my opinion, we do have the potential to have a very solid line should that scenario play out, with a few quality reinforcements, and of course, with a competent o-line coach and oc.

Attyla wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 6:52 am while a lot of these guys will resign with their current team before they hit FA, here is my take

LT
Cam Robinson is a bit older but is probably the best of the group
Rasheed Walker is my choice though as he is younger but probably does not make it to FA
RT
Jonah Williams, good age and a good player
Larry Barom is a bit of a project but has a good skill set
G
Evan Neal, I like his game
Robert Jones, another guy who is still learning but he is going to get better
David Edwards needs a change of scenery, I think he is worth a shot
Ed Ingram, another guy who has a good skill set and needs to be coached up a bit

These are the guys I have been watching. I did not include center but I have read up a bit on Connor McGovern and the pundits like his game
Thanks man. I know what I don't know and when it comes to the line I don't know a lot. I expect us to bring in at least 2-3 linemen between free agency and the draft. Probably could bring in 5 but with the draft picks this year I don't expect that many. So just trying to get some knowledge

not a problem, I think with our available cash and cap space we could get the line fixed up fast. This is a good free agent line year, and again, there will be some of those guys who get resigned before they hit the market, I expect a fair number to be there. Some have some age to them but linemen is one of those positions where if they take care of themselves they can play well into their 30's so age to me is less a factor until they hit 35-38 range. What we need are guys who can run block really well, and that is also a group that is well represented on the FA lists.

if we get a rookie QB and he starts, he already has the RB and the TE that are so important to a young QB. Build that wall around him and he should be off to the races fast
