Just my quick two cents.
I lean towards wanting a young innovative offensive mind over a defensive one. & that’s because, usually what happens with a defensive minded coach, they usually seem to hire conservative OC’s for the offense. Cause they want a slow paced defensive game. An innovative offensive coach, usually looks to hire an innovative/creative DC to challenge his offense. Because that’s what it would take to stop the top offenses in the league.
Also, top OC’s get poached much quicker than DC’s. So you’re stuck looking for OC’s too often…which can lead to more lost years. Look at the Eagles, somewhat. They’re legit scary SB contenders (& have won) when they have good coordinators. Then when they leave &, don’t have good coordinators, they don’t play nearly as well. But their team is stacked so, that makes up for a lot.
The above isn’t set in stone obviously, there’s exceptions. Just my two cents in feeling more comfortable with an OC to HC hire.
Kubiak would be at the top of my list at the moment but, the quiet even keeled personality of someone who doesn’t command the room is, a little worrisome.
Saleh is also at the top of my list but, that’s only if he can find a good OC. With Mike McDaniel getting fired, Saleh with him at OC would be an elite combo & perfect for the team right now. They both come from 9ers with Shannan. Not sure if they were together there but, if they were, maybe they’d love to work together again.
Anyway, just a couple thoughts I had so far.

Forgot to add one more thing. I want no part of any head coach who wants power over player personnel. I want them to be a coach & develop. No Grudens, Bellicheks, Jim Harbaugh types

I bet its just to touch bases with him as maybe a prospective O-coordinator down the road. No way would they hand the reins off to some little squirt.GoodTimeCharlie wrote: Wed Jan 07, 2026 4:42 am Broncos assistant Davis Webb to interview for Raiders HC job Wednesday
“The Raiders have requested an interview with Broncos quarterbacks coach/pass game coordinator Davis Webb, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.
It will be the 30-year-old Webb’s first head coaching interview.
Webb spent six seasons as an NFL backup quarterback before Sean Payton hired him as an assistant in 2023. He has worked with Russell Wilson and Bo Nix in his three seasons in Denver.
Raiders General Manager John Spytek is a former Broncos’ scout.
The Raiders also will interview Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as they seek to replace Pete Carroll, whom they fired Monday.”
(Spytek’s done being the “kid” in the room.)

"John Madden began his pro football coaching career in 1967 as the Oakland Raiders' linebackers coach. After two seasons, he was elevated to head coach. At 32 years of age when he was hired, he became the youngest head coach in the American Football League. In his first year at the Raiders' helm, Madden earned American Football League Coach of the Year honors as he led the team to a 12-1-1 record and an AFL Western Division title."rich72 wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 5:08 pm I bet its just to touch bases with him as maybe a prospective O-coordinator down the road. Not saying Webb should get the job, not saying he shouldn't. I am saying he's not to far off Madden's age when he was hired.

But Madden had a young Al Davis involved in the day to day operations.Willmark wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 5:23 pm "John Madden began his pro football coaching career in 1967 as the Oakland Raiders' linebackers coach. I imagine we here at the forum would lean heavily on the “f[raiders_icon]ck yeah, lay one on me” side. Myself included.

Big Al was 39 when he hired 32 year old Madden to HC. I’m all for a youth movement. No more dusting off cobwebs before we make a hire. In the case of Pierce, dumb should be avoided as well.rhumbob wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 6:17 pm But Madden had a young Al Davis involved in the day to day operations.
For information’s sake, Big Al was 49 when when he hired a 42 year old Tom Flores.
Some of you, or if the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree, your Dads, must have hated the Madden hire. Too young, too fat, needed a haircut the f’n hippy.

That is nice way to think, but there is no way in the modern NFL a coach will be allowed to simmer over a few years.Xramfan wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 9:56 am Webb is intriguing. I dont know much about him other than a few articles Ive read in the last 48 hours or so. There is a fairy tale take on this in that the Raiders can reinvent themselves overnight having the first pick of the draft and getting Mendoza, hiring a young first time HC that has a QB whisperer type of reputation and apparently connects with all players getting the best out of them. We have a young GM. Maybe it's time to let this stew simmer over a few years and see what happens. As Attyla pointed out, the interview can be very telling how this guy commands and fills a room and what his vision is. Mistakes will be made and thats OK as long as they all learn from them.
Of course it can all come to shit and be a horrible play for years to come but after almost 3 decades of crap, why the heck not swing?
Or we can hire "retreads" again which I am not against as long as they are convincing that they acknowledge what worked for them in the past and what failed for them in the past and what they want to do differently in this role. Again the interview(s) wins the day.
My final take is Mark Davis and Spytek and Brady have to be all in on a singular vision of what identity they are imagining the Raiders being. Then make sure you have a HC that understands and installs the plan. Let the drafts and FA come to you but we have to let things brew a bit longer than the typical 1.5 year shelf life of previous Raider coaches and GMs.
