I think we all did...

I am not surprised. He got massive last year (actually could have been even earlier) and really worked on his blocking. He fits Klint's system and he and baby Ironhead will help hide the blemishes on our OL.

I think it's a bit of an over pay. But that's based on what he's done so far. If they are paying him based off what they think he'll produce from here on out it could be a good deal. Could be the gronk Hernandez type production. I'm also glad he won't become the kelce replacement next year

Would think when they were finalizing the 53 man, Spytek/Kubiak talk about stars of camp and who we must bring beyond 2026. Mayer was probably one of them.

Another reason why they restructured Nailor and Dean this week. Spread Mayer's 45M+2M rookie contract base over 4 years.

...so I suspect this means that we are not going to still try and get a '4th or 5th rounder' in return for him?...

I hope that the two TE offense is the explanation as I would hate to think that they are already hedging their bets on the long-term health of Bowers. I wonder if in a very close examination of Bowers knee(s) to take care of this meniscus problem concerned them long-term, as in, headed for longer-term knee trouble due to structure. Probably not, but again, we are wondering about this surprise move.

The knee is not a big issue to me. Bowers will be fine and I expect them to extend him in two years as well. I am fully anticipating that he will become the highest paid TE in the league because he has become the gold standard at his position.

Looking to next year. Brady had Gronk and Hernandez with no real #1 receivers. If we draft a true #1 our offense will be dangerous if Mendoza is what we envision. Unlike many I believe Mayer is going to thrive in Kubiak’s system.

Love this. Mayer has potential to be an elite inline TE. Plays a different position than Brock in the offense. They saw that and understood you need both guys to run Kubiak's offense here. Getting this done early means his numbers will only be more palatable by the time Brock is up for an extension

This is an important piece. Stolen from Hunter on a different site:

“Its 3 new years added onto this season so its a 4 year 47M deal.

11.75M per year is much more inline with what #2 / Top Blocking TEs are getting.

Darnell Washington a few months ago got 10.5M and he is pretty much just a blocking TE/6th OL.“
