Raiders sign K Matt Gay

He was great for a couple of years and then fell off a cliff. Probably a cheap deal, and I'd expect some competition for the job from a rookie too.

I prefer that approach anyway. I want guys who are money from inside 45, and don't care so much about the long range stuff.DanKD wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2026 9:32 am He's a good kicker inside 50 yards, not so much 50+. I'd expect Kubiak to be aggressive if the team is outside the 30
Agreed. Not a position we need to solve this year. Can find one any year in UDFA or either years draft. Gay is not the long term solution. We should bring in another young guy - simply for competition.chucker wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2026 8:13 am I'm not really worried about kicker in 2026 - I know some are saying our FA class will have us competing in 2026 but I think that's premature. If we lose some games due to kicker woes in 2026, I can live with that. We could throw money at it in 2027 if needed. Or maybe it gets solved cheaply this year and we'll be happy heading into 2027. Kickers are a crapshoot - guys who are absolute money regularly turn to shit without warning.
naw kicker with big legs change game strategy and outcomes of close games...draftt he best college kicker witht he biggest leg and let gay and the rookie competechucker wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2026 9:34 am I prefer that approach anyway. The Cowboys won 1 game last year where a 50+ yarder was needed for the winning margin.mstrbass2000 wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 7:59 am naw kicker with big legs change game strategy and outcomes of close games...draftt he best college kicker witht he biggest leg and let gay and the rookie compete
just look at brandon aubreys winning kicks, dude win like 3-4 games for the cowboys a yr
aubrey tied so many games for the cowboys last yr on 50+ kicks and lets not forget the kicks to just keep em in games...kicker with big legs also change the battle of field position...start at the 35 you only need to move 20 yds and your in scoring position vs matt and having to move 30+ ydschucker wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 8:51 am The Cowboys won 1 game last year where a 50+ yarder was needed for the winning margin.
If Aubrey had missed every 50 yard attempt last season, the Cowboys would have had 1 fewer win. And that win was vs the Giants, who were terrible.mstrbass2000 wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 9:13 am aubrey tied so many games for the cowboys last yr on 50+ kicks and lets not forget the kicks to just keep em in games...kicker with big legs also change the battle of field position...start at the 35 you only need to move 20 yds and your in scoring position vs matt and having to move 30+ yds
aubrey in his 3 yrs with the cowboys has only missed a total of 6 kicks inside the 50 yd line and went 35-44 from 50 plus yds including longs og 65,64 and 60 last 3 yrs scoring 155,157 and 150 points this dude is a weapon ... in tight games witht eh clock running down you want this guychucker wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 9:22 am If Aubrey had missed every 50 yard attempt last season, the Cowboys would have had 1 fewer win. Hello Friscoislandboy wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 8:39 am I am proud our Raiders have the Gayest kicker in the entire league!
I only think this can happen only in Vegas and not Oakland.
How gay of you to point that out.islandboy wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 8:39 am I am proud our Raiders have the Gayest kicker in the entire league!

Thats a lot for a kicker competition. I still like Carlson though, he has won us many games when our offense couldnt do anything. I was a Jano fan also, so maybe I just like keeping our old kickers around.chucker wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2026 9:19 am
I would expect we'll still bring in some udfas for competition, but Gay will likely be the guy in 2026 unless he clearly loses a competition. He's had some good seasons before so it might work out really well.
