What are you all doing for Halloween?
Bye week and all so I figured I would give us another topic to discuss for a few days.
Ive developed a rep in my neighborhood for phenomenal smoked pulled pork sandwiches on Halloween night before the kids roll out for trick or treating. A few years ago it started with one pork butt but today I have 4 10lb pork butts in the frig for smoking tomorrow night.
4 10lb pork butts covered generously with Grill Mates Memphis rub and I'll put on the Yoder smoker at 200 degrees around 7:00pm tomorrow night and they will likely roll for 12 to 22 hours.
I'll wake up on Friday morning whenever and insert a couple of instant read thermometers in a couple of the butts just to keep an eye on temps.
No wrap...no spritz..........just let them ride all night and day until they hit around 195-205 IT.......I`ll pull them off and wrap in paper (not foil as my wife hates foil wraps) and then place in cooler and let ride until dinner time. (1-5 hours) Then pull apart
Hawaiian rolls and some sauce as desired and we are good.
Other neighbors supply the bar needs for the night lol

Best Halloween in years. Grandson is 18 months old and the kids live in a neighborhood filled with young kids. Mainly hung out at a table by the street handing out gobs of candy to the multitudes. Grandson not much interested in trick or treating. He helped hand out candy and danced to the Halloween playlist.
Great stuff!

Yeah, like I said no one around here has their lights on for halloween anymore. There is a neighborhood rec center type complex where the parents take their kids during the day to trick or treat. Its definitely not the same but thats what happens when groups of older teens are running wild in the streets causing trouble at night, parents no longer take their small children out for wholesome Americana activities.

Your point? Since when is life supposed to be fair?ELCAraiderfan wrote: Wed Oct 29, 2025 9:50 pm I hope there's not a game 7 fck THE dodgers. Hate em.
And baseball needs to install a absolute hard salary cap right now. so teams like the dodgers and yankees can't just keep buying trips to the world series by thumbing their noses at that soft cap bullshit
I am not a fan of either team but congrats to the Dodgers.

Putting up the Halloween
decorations, going to sit around the fire pit, drink a few cold ones and hand out candy to the kids.

Kids definitely go to specific neighborhoods now, as opposed to just scouring their immediate neighborhood, but other than that it's pretty much the same. Probably started from kids texting each other about where the best (biggest) candy and haunted houses are.
FWIW, not sure how much the rumors of tainted candy have persisted, or how much it still affects how parents let their kids participate, but there has never been a documented case of anyone actually doing this. A few cases of parents poisoning their own kids' candy, but nothing with strangers.
One of my coworkers lives in an area where they get a ton of kids/families come in, so we have a tradition of playing some music for the trick or treaters - pretty fun.

My folks played creepy music for the trick or treaters when I still lived there.
Razor blades in apples was the scare story we got.

yea, that was the story. It never happened. We had a guy around the block who gave out ice cream cones. He owed a 31 flavors and we loaded up. Gave you a double scoop if your costume rocked. Mom said have at it. She would do candy apples and popcorn balls and nobody ever thought a thing about it. I grew up in a time when we went out on our own, and we stayed out until people started turning off the porchlights. Pillow cases were our candy bags and we might score so big we had to dump and go back out.raider_kin wrote: Sun Nov 02, 2025 12:33 pm My folks played creepy music for the trick or treaters when I still lived there.

I kind of felt bad turning off our light this year, but the pup is just not ready for that level of activity yet

When I train my bird dogs, I associate loud sounds with food and it works very well. I’d put food in a bowl, I shoot a cap gun then set it down. While eating I pop it off a few more times. After awhile, pup won’t even blink.Attyla wrote: Sun Nov 02, 2025 12:41 pm yea, that was the story. It never happened. We had a guy around the block who gave out ice cream cones.
