I'm passing on the guy with 15 starts in his college career out of sheer principle.
I will take the guy who has played well at two different schools, in multiple systems, and has made plays when it mattered.
^^^
Is that foolproof? No. Does it mean Mendoza is going to work out? No.
But I will err on that side of things.
Again, I don't view Mendoza turning out to be a bust as an excuse to stink it up. We have a good coach. Hit on other picks. Develop players. Implement a good system. Draft the next QB and get back after it.

Simpson also was in his 4th year at Alabama and 2nd year with the same coaching staff. While Mendoza transferred to a new school and new coaching staff. We all know how many years it takes to learn a new system.
I don't mind a contrarian view, but it seems like that was Orlovsky's goal from the outset. Choose a hot take, then try to support it. If he didn't seem like such a dick, I might feel sorry for him. He looked like he might actually have been crying when McAfee was roasting him.

I was about to start calling him Stephen A OrlovskyJeevo wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 9:57 am It doesn't really matter if these talking heads are accurate as long as they're controversial and can drive eyeballs and clicks. How else could you explain windbags like Stephen A. Smith making the money that they do?

Fernando Mendoza got better as teams had more Indiana tape on him. Ty Simpson got worse as teams got more tape on him. Fernando started at two schools. Ty rode the bench for years

Theres a good chance Ty wasnt going to be the best QB on his team next year. He is also older than Mendoza so thats not an excuse for fewer starts or performance.

These are good points. Fernando does not make the same mistake twice. Look at the beginning of the Alabama game when he took a couple sacks. Then he made adjustments and wasn’t sacked again the rest of the game in the Oregon game he made adjustments again in the beginning when it seemed close, then the rest of the game he took over and led to lead the team to a blowout.Goodtimes333 wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 1:54 pm Fernando Mendoza got better as teams had more Indiana tape on him. This is what separates Fernandofrom all the QBs in this class and compared to recent QBs in previous drafts. This kid seems to have a pretty big brain and understands what needs to be done to be successful.

I did enjoy that Dan kept bringing up 6 points in the first half against Ohio State. Ohio state that had 3 guys on their d that may go top 10…. Versus Indiana… who hasn’t produced a top 10 pick (prior to Fernando) in like 40 years.mstrbass2000 wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 10:15 am Chase Daniel

This whole segment from Pat & Dan is fascinating to me.
Biggest stages for Fernando Mendoza:
#1 OSU / #9 Alabama / #5 Oregon / #10 Miami
– 32 PPG
– 10 TDs
– 1 INT

Followed up by Kiper saying he hasn't spoken to any GMs that feel that Simpson is the better QB.chucker wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 8:34 am Ooops..... I originally posted this in the wrong thread:
A couple of things about Orlovsky's take:
1. He's made himself a guest on whatever show he wants, because agreeing with consensus is less interesting than going against the grain. He's managed to make himself relevant in the draft discussion, when I don't think he was ever relevant before.
2. I find this interesting: "Dan Orlovsky says that he texted 12–15 GMs/decision-makers that Alabama QB Ty Simpson is the best QB in the draft, and only 2 disagreed." Does that mean that 10-13 agreed, or that they ignored his text like I would ignore it if SFRF texted me about pee troughs? It's interesting that he never said if even a single decision-maker agreed.

Indiana is such an amazing story in part because they were very much outclassed in talent against Ohio State, Oregon, Alabama and Miami. They were just so well coached and played their asses off. They were clutch and played excellent team ball. Cignetti is a stud.
Also keep in mind Georgia was heavily after Mendoza. That says a lot imo. He has a lot of traits that remind me of Tom Brady to be honest. The new age nfl gets a hard cock over running around and dodging sacks, hero ball type stuff. A super intelligent pocket passer with great accuracy gets lost in the media fluff

Raiders’ Ashton Jeanty weighs in on Fernando Mendoza-Ty Simpson debate…
“Whoever we draft at quarterback is better,” he said
Well done Ashton. That’s his whole comment. Hahaha. Thumbs-up young man.

Mendoza is better than Simpson. The quote I like about his style is "He will bore you to death and then beat you by 40 points." He is almost zero flash but is also hyper focused, I don't think I saw one game of his where he enjoyed the moment until after the final whistle

I'm just hoping that FM is anywhere near as good as we think he is. But after much time and thought, I'm gonna pump the brakes on him until I see him actually perform and succeed vs NFL competition.
For most of us, we got duped last year and though I feel we will be better than last year, I'm just not completely sure just how much better, and FM will obviously be a huge factor in that.
For he most part, I like the moves/acquisitions management has made thus far by addressing so many deficiencies from last season's roster, on both sides of the ball.
And I have to admit that considering how atrocious the Raiders have been for the last several years, there does seem to finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Well obviously there is no way to know how a guy will translate to the next level and QB in particular is a position that has more questions along those lines than any other position. That position boils down to leadership. And leadership requires a high level of maturity. It is those two reasons I have thought all along that guys like Ward and Richardson will struggle. Neither has been able to achieve success early on. It is also why I have a reasonable level of hope for Mendoza.raidersince63 wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 5:32 am I'm just hoping that FM is anywhere near as good as we think he is. Leadership is what drove Brady, Montana and Unitas. I am not suggesting he is on those guys' level, but each one of those guys was not considered highly starting out. Each one of those guys merely lead.

For me, just as important as athleticism, leadership, and maturity, is something that I always look for, which is intelligence. That is a trait that Brady, Montana, Unitas, and other greats also possessed.Attyla wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 5:50 am Well obviously there is no way to know how a guy will translate to the next level and QB in particular is a position that has more questions along those lines than any other position. Mendoza certainly appears to be a very cerebral individual as well, and if/when he gets acclimated with the speed of the NFL game, he has the other tools to make us all proud.
