Free Agency thread for Raiders and league-wide

Unread post by RunOverByHubbard »

Free agency opens March 11. CBS Sports has their top 50 ranking. No Raiders on the list. I am surprised at a couple rated high - Aaron Rodgers and Daniel Jones. Lots of wide receivers

We are a little over a month away from the beginning of the NFL new year. And the legal tampering date is exactly a month away. This is when teams begin to ramp up signing back their own or letting them opt for free agency. Lot of moving parts to this but other than fleshing out our coaching staff, this is the next great thing to discuss. I really wish I knew who we are resigning as well as a pretty good list of who is going to be out there.
Of our list of guys, I can safely say there are more than a few who can be let go, including
Pickett
Parham
Edmunds
Lockett
Adams
White (both of them)

Some guys under contract that I am not losing sleep over include
Geno Smith
Tyree Wilson
Cappa
O'Connell (although cheap to keep so no big deal either way)

There are of course others but those stand out. But this is our next windmill

Cousins a FA at the start of the league year. One year deal, insurance in case Mendoza isn't ready week 1? (He's 37, doubt he wants to play much longer)
Ready or not Mendoza will start week one. If we're talking about QB2 than keep AOC because the only way hes going to see the field is if Mendoza gets injured. Then its season over and tank 2 can begin.

I would not sign Cousins. He will come with a higher price. Get a guy who is a backup so you pay less. We have O'Connell in the ranks and he is cheap, get a third guy from the backup ranks of another team. I keep throwing out one guy but there will be others for sure.

I mostly agree with your list I wouldn't be against resigning Parham to a value deal if we could get it. He's serviceable. And probably would fit better in a zone based scheme anyways

His cap number last season was 3.8M or so. Value to the team is more like 1.2M. I am not paying near his cap number to bring him back but someone is going to pay him more than his value to the team simply on the bet that they can get more out of him. I am at a 1.5 max per year deal but he can walk on that if he wants. And I would not be guaranteeing a deal for him.

I was right at 2m. When I said value. So not too far off. And I agree someone will probably overpay for him. In which case I'm out

I would put WR at the very bottom of our priority list where it belongs. Shit, in Kubiak's system, a complimentary RB is more of a priority than WR.

Diggs is one of the best WR1's. And what did he do for his team yesterday? Nothing because the DL and Olines negated his ability to be affective. We are fine on the offensive weapons for now, build the trenches first then you can add weapons later
I saw a 4 man rush that dominated. See: patriots vs giants.

But we are talking about offense today.

Diggs hasn’t done anything all year.

Cousins, the guy who has borderline fleeced the NFL with every contract signing is not ready to consider himself “backup” material yet.

I like Tyrod Taylor, or your guy Trubisky. Both have had some time running schemes related to Kubiak’s, though not directly, with Taylor having just a smidge more. Both are also comfortable being in the backup (QB Asst.) role. And AOC would make for an excellent 3rd.

Not FA per se, but Spotrac has a page with trade candidates and the cap hits for the team and for whatever team might trade for the player.

I still think we are going to see a better O'Connell this year. Not starting caliber, but improved.

I wonder what it would take to get 24 year old WR Jordan Addison? I liked him a lot coming out of Pittsburgh.

I think there's a better chance that we don't see O'Connell at all this year because he never hits the field. At least I hope not.

Too bad he'll be showcasing that improvement on the sidelines. Hopefully another teams sideline.
