This isn't a real situation, just a thought experiment.

No throw-ins - no additional picks or players from either side. Contract situation is part of the question - player for pick and player has to be paid as per his contract or expected contract.

I might just have Burrow, Allen, Mahomes, Maye and that's it. And age and injuries mean it isn't as clear as you might think in favor of some of those guys.

Daniels gets injured a lot. Williams is spectacular and still frustrating at other times - I still don't know if he'll be great or spectacularly inconsistent. Both of those young guys will be looking for new contracts in a year too. Stafford is near retirement. Herbert is smaller in bigger moments. Jackson gets injured too much and will be looking for a massive new contract.

There are not any non-QBs I would consider.

Maybe I'm missing someone. Probably a lot of people don't give a shit..... again it's just a thought experiment.
Maye and Allen. That's it for me.

For real. I hadn't watched this till today, Mendoza has a great personality. He is a very intelligent and mature person, and you can see why he's persevered and had the success he's had recently. That's our qb.

The Ravens are about to enter the period where their QB is expensive and running at 31 won’t be the same as running at 21.

Yes I know Lamar just turned 29 but the point is simple. He’s now going to be running against guys 10 years younger than him. 21 year olds against him at 29. He’s still a dynamic QB but it’s just not as easy to do, as in and game out as he continues to age.

TLDR? Football wear and tear is a real thing, especially for a QB like Lamar as he ages.

As far as Mendoza?

Year one he doesn’t have to play hero ball. Nor do we want him to be. Simply efficient.

Dink and dunk and lull the Defense to sleep. Run 12 personnel as the base. Tucker, Besch, Pierce/Shaheed at WR. Again dink and dunk. Take what they are giving? Sounds a lot like a former Pats QB who is now a part owner. Not saying he will be Brady but look at Brady’s early years in NE. It was a lot of boring, ball control running and short passing.

Line is a lot closer than we think if we can have Miller and JPJ back all season.

Then Kubiak calling plays?

I think everyone is who is a Raiders fan is hoping for that. A (still) substantial contingent who were first and foremost fans and of a previous QB?

Let’s just say I have my doubts.

Having the 1st pick, and it's going to be a QB got me to thinking back to Jabustus (yeah I know, chase THAT thought right out). Was there any doubt about him then, anybody questioning that pick? I truly can't remember. I know Kiffin wanted Megatron, but I can't remember if anyone pointed out warning signs (I think it was a low point in my Raider fandom, and/or memory fades)

I’m a Notre Dame fan and was watching that game with one thought: “I hope Al is asleep right now.”

Granted I wanted Quinn but who flamed out in the NFL. At least he’s not mentioned in the same breath as Ryan Leaf.

There were certainly questions about the pick. His work ethic was questioned and there were certainly questions of whether he was the best player that draft.

Attyla wrote: Sat Jan 24, 2026 7:40 am Fernando has a better arm than Smith. He is a Burrow type arm. Lawrence has a great arm, but Mendoza has a better head on his shoulders. Out of that group, obviously, Luck is the crown jewel. If Mendoza can get to 80% Luck taken level we got something. He just needs blocking. As has been stated, we really don't know how good or bad our linemen are because of the shit coaching. But I am confident Spytek is going to be aggressive when it comes to protection for Mendoza and Jeanty.

But you all need to remember we have two above average blocking TEs as well. I know you all want Bowers in coverage but the chip release that Bowers already has in his arsenal is very effective.
I see more Matt Ryan in him but of those mentioned i see an Smith floor, Goff middle & Luck ceiling if he is good, i dont want to think of any other outcome.

When you look at how Kubiak likes to line up he does like an H-Back in the backfield so i could see us using Bowers & Mayer in that role but i do think we’ll pick up someone whether through the draft or FA that will be that guy,

Seen some discussion about Mendoza being THE 4th best QB prospect in the last 4 years with only Maye, Williams & Daniels being better prospect coming out & i kind of agree

Just think this time last year people we saying we should trade our 1st for JJ McCarthy which has really aged well

There is no real way to know how Mendoza compares to qbs taken in recent drafts until we've seen him in action in his first few NFL seasons. If I was to make a bet, I think he's going to exceed most of if not all the qbs taken in the last few drafts. Famous last words I know.

There were a lot of warning signs...... I didn't want us to draft him. I don't think that makes me a draft expert and I wasn't alone. Some people put way more stock into pro days and physical traits for a QB and so there were some people who thought he was the right pick. There were plenty of vocal people who disagreed.

Mendoza will be better than any QB drafted last year and likely better than at least 3 from the year before. Im fairly confident about that.
