Was that the same phone where Al would yell at defensive coordinators who'd run a blitz that didn't work?SuperRaider wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 5:51 am The main problem with the movie will be that most of the audiences will already know the real John Madden; and it almost impossible to get someone to play him…..Madden was unique
Probably should have been a nobody to play Madden; hope they show the landline telephone on the sideline where Al use to call the plays in….

Some lean harder in the Comedy direction than others, but certainly never anything approaching punchline/zinger. He did direct “The Fighter”. That one was solidly in the Drama category.
I appreciate that the story of Madden is being directed by a guy whose films are connected to 26 Oscar noms and 3 wins. For a guy like Madden who is legend in Raider lore, Football, Broadcasting, Commercials, Video Games, Thanksgiving, and really the entirety of the American Sports landscape, it is soundly and justly deserved.
Camp is an apt description. But then the ‘70s can come off as pretty fk’n camp all on its own. Hoping this one is more “American Hustle” than “Amsterdam”. For all the accolades he receives, I’ve only ever watched one of his films (Hustle) more than once.Arsenal Raider wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 10:59 am I've seen a handful of his movies, so I'm familiar with the style you're referring to. This looks intentionally more "camp" than some of his others. Seems like Nic Cage is meant to look and sound absolutely ridiculous haha.
Hopefully it'll have enough drama to maintain a level respect for these legends.
...then maybe frank c would have been the better choice for Madden, and make him taller through the wonders of hollywood....Xramfan wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 12:50 pm Wife and i saw a commercial for it and I immediately didnt like it but my wife turned to me and said, "You do realize that wasnt meant to be serious. Still leaves room for Tarantino to make a real Oakland Raiders movie.Xramfan wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 12:50 pm Wife and i saw a commercial for it and I immediately didnt like it but my wife turned to me and said, "You do realize that wasnt meant to be serious. I am not worried about how close to looking like the two principals they are. If the movie is good, I won't focus on that fact that they did not try to make them up to be the exact. But in any case, I don't think the "look" of Nic Cage Madden is THAT far off:ELCAraiderfan wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 5:17 am This movie is going to suck major ass. Bale doesn't look or act anything like Al Davis and Cage is/was a terrible, horrible choice to play John Madden. He doesn't look, sound or act anything like Madden. Hell for Bale for Al's role they don't even have Al's look right. The hair looks nothing like the way Al's used to look.
I wonder if some Al Davis and John Madden haters made this movie.
Warren Sapp came out with the story about a telephone being on the sideline when he came to the raiders; it was a good story; wish I could find it againSir Raider Duck, OMS wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 7:40 am Was that the same phone where Al would yell at defensive coordinators who'd run a blitz that didn't work?
It's always interesting when a well-known personality plays another well-known personality. Clint Eastwood as a thinly-disguised John Huston, Ray Liotta as Frank Sinatra, Anthony Hopkins as Richard Nixon, Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, and Angela Bassett as Tina Turner are a few examples. Some worked, some didn't.
Otto, who was in Davis's luxury box almost every game says in his book point blank that Davis had a phone that was connected to the sidelines and he would call down defensive plays to the coordinator during the games. Otto did defend it saying most all the time Davis called down the correct call. Otto was loyal to a fault.SuperRaider wrote: Sun Sep 27, 2026 12:25 am Warren Sapp came out with the story about a telephone being on the sideline when he came to the raiders; it was a good story; wish I could find it again
