Should the NFL adopt the UFL's 4-point field goal rule?

ACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Should the NFL consider making field goals of 60 or more yards worth four points?
While there's currently no momentum or proposal by the NFL competition committee, some current players and Pro Football Hall of Famers are at least intrigued (with mixed opinions) by the idea of awarding an additional point for converting on a distance that isn't all that rare anymore.
Two seasons ago, the NFL revamped its kickoff rules in hopes of reducing injuries and encouraging more returns when it implemented a dynamic kickoff structure that had been used in the XFL, a spring football league now known as the UFL.
The changes worked. The return rate in the NFL increased from 21.8% in 2023 to 32.8% in 2024. Further tweaks to league rules in 2025 resulted in the rate jumping to 74.5% in 2025.
This year, the UFL implemented the four-point field goal and saw an uptick in 60-yard field goals. During the UFL's 2025 season, no 60-yard field goals were made. But in 2026, the league went 8-for-14 (57.1%) on such kicks, including going 4-for-4 in the playoffs.
Last season in the NFL, kickers attempted a record 22 field goals of 60 or more yards and made 12 (55%). That's nearly as many successful field goals from 60-plus yards last season were nearly as many as kickers made in the previous three seasons (14).

How would you do kickoff?Corleone wrote: Sun Jul 19, 2026 9:40 am I'd rather find a way to eliminate kicking all together tbh. Definitely punting, but not a fan of any kicking, and while we're at it, change the name to something that represents the sport better than the name "football", I propose "handegg".

No.
The offense shouldn't have a chance at an extra point If they can't get past the 43 yard line. This rule rewards offensive incompetence IMO.

Super Toe will join the nfl and there will be teams snapping from the 35, place holder lined up at 50, just to get that extra point! :)Amish Cabal wrote: Mon Jul 20, 2026 7:09 am No.

I used to be in favor of the 4 point field goal from that far out, but over the last decade Dempsey's old record has been beaten multiple times, which has rendered the 60+ yard field goal not that big of a deal. It's still relatively rare, but when it happens multiple times per season, it becomes a regular part of the game and therefore shouldn't be considered anything extra special.

Contact powskiThis made me curious about whether FG scores happen more often than TD scores. I figured more FG scoring plays (not points) since it's easier to get yards outside the red zone thereby getting in FG range, as compared to getting to the red zone and then punching it all the way in.
I was wrong. Typically TDs are 58-60% of the scoring plays.
TDs though arent always scored in the red zone is part of it. 23-27% of TDs are on average scored on long plays beginning outside it.

Why would you want to encourage more field goals? If anything I'd change field goals to 2 points.

I'm still irritated at the OT rules put in place after the Bills fans bitched about taking an earned loss in that playoff game. I miss sudden death OT personally

Just leave the rules alone...Every season they find new rules to fk up a once great game for no other reason than $$$..The integrity of the game has been an after thought with news rules for ages.

How about the NFL fix the officiating first.

....no. ....and I would have rather had them make other changes rather than changing past rules, such as 'slow the field down', before stuff like what they have done to kick offs, whether that be with grass fields where feasible, or changes in the fake turf, when not. ....if they are so called, adjusting to the speed of the game, slow it down a bit.

No thanks. Honestly if there’s a rule that could use an overhaul it’s the onside kick imo. Was never a high success play but the changes to kickoff rules have especially neutered it. Make it something like a 4th and 20 that can’t be converted by penalty.
