I don't love this. I get it, but I don't love it.

I think after Atlanta he's likely accepted at this point that he's a bridge QB and it's not like he made any noise in Atlanta after being benched for Penix. I'm sure the Raiders had discussions about him mentoring Mendoza and wouldn't have offered him a contract if he wasn't on board with his role. Would you rather Mendoza mentor under a QB like Cousins who has ran offenses at a high level over his career or junk like Geno Smith who's best trait is throwing picks?pfish57 wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:30 am Cousins has always been about the $$$$$$ not sure what kind of mentor he will be!

Interesting. I had a feeling it would happen. I just wonder if Cousins starts and plays just good enough to have the Raiders in playoff contention, will we even f[raiders_icon]cking see Mendoza? Wtf. Im still betting on Mendoza starting week 1.
And no, Cousins isn't a f[raiders_icon]cking mentor.

I heard that Cousins really likes Mendoza and was already giving Fernando advice when interviewed about him. It will be fine, in the words or the immortal Al, “He’s a great playa, get ova it.”Attyla wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:38 am So, here are the positives for this signing:
And here are the negatives:
Selfish, me first guy who will offer up almost nothing to the rookie
Mediocre player
Will take snaps from the rookie
Will only hurt Mendoza's development
Will almost certainly start the season as our QB
Damn, I really did not want this guy

That's a good thing as it means that the roster around the QB is coming around quickly. Clearly they want to iron out the kinks of new players and coaching staff prior prior to dropping in Mendoza to start and if things evolve fast enough that the Raiders are actually in playoff contention, that means a lot of things went right in personnel decision making and on the coaching front. Cousins is familiar with this offense and should be able to help kickstart Bowers, Jeanty, and the young receivers. I have never been a big Cousins fan but I really don't see any downsides with this.BoKnows81 wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:46 am Ridiculous. If I put myself in Cousins shoes, this is clearly the end of the road, and how I handle this bridge assignment could determine my career options after playing. Dude has made enough money where he could just invest well and never work again, but I'm sure he will want to work.ALLRAIDERWORLD21 wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:47 am I heard that Cousins really likes Mendoza and was already giving Fernando advice when interviewed about him. I hope he takes this assignment as:
-Prove I still understand the game at a high level
-Once Mendoza starts prove I can be a valuable asset to the QB and staff with a clipboard in my hand so that I'm a candidate for QB assistant roles
Framed that way, I don't think Cousins needs to be selfless to help Mendoza's development. He can probably help with that simply by learning as much as he can about coaching from Kubiak

I really have zero problem with this move. If you think this move somehow will harm Mendoza's development and that he will take too many reps away from Mendoza that tells me you have zero faith in Kubiak and this coaching staff.
If Mendoza is ready, he will start.
If he is not Cousins will start until he is.
He can then take all the shots until the line is fixed.
It really covers all bases for us.
We want Mendoza to sit and learn, Cousins allows us to do that. We want Mendoza to start and have a guy behind him who can benefit from having on the team, he does that too. AOC, Allan, Lock, Taylor, those guys do not fit that bill. They are good guys to have if your starter gets injured, Cousins can do that too and offer more.
Cousins gets a bad rap, but he is a really good dude. He has a strong faith which will match with with Mendo. He is extremely meticulous and prepares as well as anyone in the NFL for each game which include all of his notebooks. His cerebral approach mirrors Menzo. Kirk can definitely help Mendoza a lot with all of the pre-game and off-field stuff that is needed to be a NFL QB.

Why would we even need to win games before Mendoza takes over? We’re not going to be in contention and another high pick is better than the alternative. Maybe Kubiak is planning on him sitting for longer than any of us thought right now.chucker wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:25 am Neither am I. It's probably low money because of offsets from Atlanta, but I'm too impatient. I don't care if we're competitive in the time before Mendoza is on the field. That's throwaway time for me.

Didn’t he allude to the idea that he ain’t interested in being a mentor to anyone?

I don't get why people are mad at Cousins making money. That makes no sense. Should he have turned down the contracts offered him? Should he have let teams take advantage of him and his agent like many other idiot players do? It confuses me.

No, not liking this move has zero to do with trusting Kubiak. It does have to do with that ass clown in silver and black. Kubiak is getting a guy who he is comfortable with. That does not mean I have to like it.haji81872 wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:55 am I really have zero problem with this move. Yeah, the last thing I want to see is Mendoza thrown into the fire, getting blown out and making rookie mistakes right out of the gate, while idiots like Dan Olovsky sit around and tell us “I told you so.” And for other Raiders fans who don’t know ball to flood social media posting that Mendoza is a bust after two games. Don’t need that shit right now, especially after recent history of the franchise and not in this day and age when everyone out there has is a couch and online GM.heavyD wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:39 am Clearly they weren't bluffing about sitting Mendoza for a season. I'm sure he will see time in games that are blowouts one way or the other or even a Cousins injury. I don't see this as a bad thing really as with a new offense there will be a lot of moving parts and year two of the offense may be a better place for Mendoza to get his feet wet.
I’m a huge fan of bringing Mendoza along slowly and building his confidence, it worked for Mahomes obviously.. And if the coaches think he’s ready to start day one, all the better.

Most of the time it's not necessary to have a mentor. For the time between minicamp and training camp, I'd like Mendoza to have a mentor - when he can't be with coaches every day.
We shouldn't be surprised by this - Brady and Spytek have been saying they'd make a move like this one. Brady didn't have a mentor, he had a pro QB who he watched operate. Mahomes as well. I guess that's what they're going for. I preach patience a lot, but now I have to practice it I suppose.

Different situation. He was signed to be the Falcons as a starter and they flipped the script on everyone and drafted Penix. I think that threw Cousins off guard and he made a harsh comment when asked about it.NoClapsPlease wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2026 6:58 am Didn’t he allude to the idea that he ain’t interested in being a mentor to anyone?
He knows exactly what he’s walking into with the Raiders and he likes Mendoza. Not that he didn’t like Penix, but he wasn’t happy about the situation. I’m fully confident that he’s accepted the mentor role here in Vegas.

I mean the main three main guys continually said throughout the offseason that they didn't want a rookie qb starting game one. So far the fo has held true to the words that they've said with their overall plan for sustained success, including trading a valuable player for PREMIUM picks to help the rebuild. Obviously that trade didn't work out
