I love Dire Straits, I almost felt like I was an evangelist for them here in New York in the early 80s when no one was listening to them in this area and Love Over Gold came out. I felt like an out of touch dipshit trying to get my friends to like Telegraph Road and Private Investigations and this was before I turned 19. They were so huge around the world, Private Investigations was a top 5 hit in like 30 countries in a 6 minute edit and yet I would play it on my ghetto blaster at the park and friends would ask me if I brought any Zep or Doors tapes to play.
I met Mark Knopfler outside the WNEW radio station maybe 3 months before Brothers In Arms came out. WNEW used to always have some type of guest artist come to the station but it always seemed spur of the moment. With Knopfler, they announced that he would be there the morning before, so I went to work with their live album, Alchemy, tucked under my arm, and since I worked a block from there, was able to sneak out for a quick autograph. I found him and his wife, Lourdes I think, outside waiting for a cab so I kindly asked for an autograph on the album jacket. He signed it and we started talking for a couple minutes. A couple of minutes started to add up, especially when I tried to ask some silly but sort of "I'm musically smart" questions, like "I heard the Brecker Brothers are on the album!" Or "I heard Omar Hakim is on the album!" Lourdes went and sat in the cab, and Mark stood there and and almost gave me a patient, detailed listing of the artists on BIA. After a few minutes of us talking, she walked out of the cab, approached him, said the car was waiting, and he kindly waved her away!! I have never felt so honored in my life that Mark would hand wave his wife to chat with me. So, after a few more minutes of chatting, I said to him something really stupid like "I hope you make it big this year!!!" or something dumb like that and he gave me this really weird look, like, "don't worry, we got some things up our sleeves"

Very cool. Never got 2C them play live. Every time they released an album I raced out to buy it. I always thought their sound at the time was unique. Knopfler is pure genius.

Metal Church drummer Kirk Arrington plays for a church band in the town I live in. He is really cool. One of the guys I jam with is pretty good friends with him, he said he could probably get Kirk to jam with us in the next month or so. That would be nuts if it happens.

Kirk last played with MC in 2006, Jeff Plate is the current drummer. They've had a ton of guys in and out of the band over the years the only mainstay has been Kurdt Vanderhoof...
