Love/Hate relationships pepper the music industry, even going so far as siblings at times. But having a love/hate relationship with a song is a bit more rare. Gary Richrath had that with the pop version of REO Speedwagon, but there is one artist who took that to another level. Here is the story.
The song was written for a movie soundtrack and originally was given to Glenn Frey to sing. But Frey did not like the lyrics and then got laryngitis so he backed out. A fellow Michigan artist was asked to sing the song, but he also did not like the lyrics so he rewrote them to his liking. The song was added to the movie and released as a single. It went to number one on the charts and also in a number of countries including Canada and the UK. It was also a top ten hit in Australia. It was also this artist's only number one song. But he was not fond of it and it was a hit or miss song when he performed live. It got so bad that he refused to put it on his first Greatest Hits album. It finally got recognized when he released his second Greatest Hits recording. I am personally not a fan of the song and the artist himself is really not one I seek out on the radio. But there is no denying his talent and his other chart almost topping work. Think you know who I am talking about? If you pinpointed Skakedown by Bob Seger, move to the head of the class. Seger also wrote Heartache Tonight which was a number one hit for Frey and the Eagles so he does get an honorable mention in that regard. Seger did have a number one album with Against the Wind, but the song only went to number five on the charts.
So without further walks down memory lane, from 1980 here is my personal favorite song from a man I really don't follow
