What does the number two, Barbara Streisand's boobs and a distinct jazz influence have to do with an late 60's rock band? Even the name of the band just says they work hard for the money. Here's the story.
They formed in 1967 playing mostly in and around New York, with a lineup of eight members. The Jazz influence came from their enthusiasm for Theloniious Monk, a well known at the time, jazz writer and performer. Eight members was a lot for a rock band in the 60's but they wanted a big band sound so they needed a horn section. And no, this is not Chicago although they did have a member named Katz, like Chicago had back in the day. How does Babs fit into the story? They produced soundtrack music for the movie "The Owl and The Pussycat" starring Streisand, which did very well in 1970, and is noted for a deleted scene in the movie featuring her tits. And what of the number two? Here is where the fun begins. Their second album spawned a string of chart almost topping hits. As a matter of fact, all the singles released from their self titled second album went to number 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Think you know who I am referring to? If you guessed Blood Sweat and Tears, give yourself a gold star. Of the eight original members, all but one are still alive. And while the band still tours, not one original member is in the band, nor the lineup that actually made it big. In actuality, there has been an estimated 165 people who have been "members" of the band. As for Chicago? BST has actually toured with the other group who at one point had a Katz in the lineup, but neither group has had a Katz in the house in a very long time. And those number two songs? Two of them were covers.
From 1968 here is Blood Sweat and Tears and their only original number two ranked song, Spinning Wheel, which is actually my second favorite song of theirs. I like one of the covers better.
