I just don’t get it...
We aren’t scouts or coaches, but a lot of us have watched every snap of his career.
Every QB has a stinker here and there, even the great ones, but this guy does repeatedly and he keeps making big money and starting every year.

The national media doesn’t watch like we do and they f’n love the guy.

What am I missing?
What Guydon said.

There not going to give a 32 year old QB 36 mil.
32 would be fine or even a bargain if the 32 year old was a stud.

The one in question is a one read arm talent still with shoddy at best mechanics, as poor a pocket awareness as has ever been seen with this much experience, is really, really bad in the red zone, little functional mobility even within the pocket, not great on third down, and a finger pointing, crying tittybaby.
so did some comparing because comparing a QB to one other one is what we do now....and interestingly enough...
Herbert in the last three years vs Carr in the same span...Let's throw in Cousins for fun
Wins: 22 /23 /25
Passing Yards: 13056 / 12024 /11844
TD Passes: 90 / 70 /88
INTs: 32 /33 /29
Fumbles: 15 /27 /26
Rushing : 679 /336 /329
Rushing TDs: 8 /3 /4
Sacks: 93 /77 /100

Very close in stats to be sure. Well except the TDs, rushing and rushing TDs. One telling thing which I already knew was that Carr's protection has been far better than Herbert's.

But fun numbers none the less....and that is an interesting fact.
Thought I'd throw Cousins in there for more fun. Make no mistake, I'm glad Herbert and the Chargers have lost games, not made the playoffs, etc. but to my eyes Herbert is a much better QB overall than Carr. Cousins is a good comp to Carr, way more TD passes of course and since QB wins matter I guess it's no question who's better
I agree with your first scenario as the most likely. Carr reworks his deal and takes a paycut and we draft someone outside the 1st.

I think there’s some real codependency between us and Carr. For us - the fear of moving on from a 9 year starter and failing. For carr, the moment he leaves he gets dangerously close to stop gap territory.

I think your scenario kind of works for both. Drafting a QB in the 2nd doesn’t inherently threaten carrs starting job and in theory - if he plays well there’s no pressure to start the other guy at all. For us - it allows us to develop a guy we may have high hopes for without necessarily creating a QB controversy or going all in on a rookie.
Appreciate the feedback. I thought I was being sensible with my post - some seem to disagree and that’s perfectly fine.

I’m moderately surprised by all the Herbert talk. Don’t get me wrong, he is light years better than Carr AFAIC. But why is that even relevant? Let’s say the “Herbert Haters” are right and he sucks… how does that make it any less relevant that Carr sucks? If Herbert sucks, Carr definitely sucks. Like really bad. And if Herbert sucks, that’s the Chargers problem. Doesn’t mean we should make the same mistake.

Again, to be 100% clear, I think Herbert is a good player. But regardless of what you think of him, it’s not really germane to the Carr discussion. Doesn’t matter if Herbert is Marino or sucks balls. Carr sucks balls independent of anyone’s opinion of Herbert

I think it’s time to work on actually having a defense, it starts with getting a middle linebacker in the first round and solidifying it from there.

I used to think Carr was good enough to win with, but after this season it is clear that this is not the case. There is no way the Raiders should be paying Carr per the terms of his current contract next season. After the poor showing this season, they need to renegotiate Carr's contract and pay him like a bridge QB or backup because that is what he is playing like. If they are unable to do that, then a trade or straight out cut is the order of the day.

Once the Raiders finally move on, the seasons with Carr at QB will be referred to by the organization as "the lost years". This draft pick and the subsequent anointing of Carr into the starting role will be looked upon as mistakes. Carr has written his legacy as an NFL QB and it is not what we as Raider fans had hoped for. Almost a full decade of what amounts to sheer mediocrity due to unfathomable inconsistency and failure to improve his game.
