Carr is so busy trying to defend everything he does that it leaves no room for actual learning. Carr can't get out of his own way in order to become a better QB.
This has been going on for a long, long, long time.
I've harped it on before, but what the hell, I'll do it again.
What you said can be seen in the year after year failure to get better at play-action and pump-faking. These two little things are Carr's approach to the game in microcosm. To me it says that at some point he came to believe he's done enough learning; he's good as-is.
It would help to explain his inability to learn a new scheme over the course of 5-6 months (one offseason). Mariota, who knew he was going to be a backup, learned Gruden's system in a single offseason, so that if called upon, he'd be ready.
Still throwing off his back foot (balloon balls), still miss open receivers, and his accuracy is in the shitter. And IMHO, it's because he believes he doesn't need to improve.
I know you're posting this because of the joke about the Raiders, but honestly the original Josh Allen quote is what I would love to hear Carr say. I don't listen to postgame pressers, but I've seen the quotes from Carr from this one and the accountability simply isn't there. He certainly wasn't the only problem in the game. But he was a problem, and he's the only problem that's been around for so long. It's simply time to accept that, even when he's not the problem, he's not the solution. Time to move on.
The great ones always are hardest on themselves, they are never satisfied with anything they do, thinking they could always do better.
Then you have others that simply defend everything they do. They say some ridiculous platitudes come presser time ("its on me"), but shown any particular play, they simply defend their choices and never admit they are wrong. Carr is the epitome of this.
That difference goes a long way to explaining why Carr has not evolved while some young guns have quickly surpassed him to become elite QBs.
This isn’t just an issue this year… it was reported last season after Gruden stepped down that Rich B and other staffers said that Carr refused to take responsibility of missed opportunities and poor play in meetings often coming with excuses for them. He operates like he has no fear of losing his spot on the team and it’s probably due to Mark Davis.
Great post!
When Derek made the proclamation that he would "be a Raider as long as he wants to be", I suspected a guy would only say that publicly with the backing of someone "high up". And yeah, most of us have taken note of his accountability issues. The halo is looking tarnished.

But he was a problem, and he's the only problem that's been around for so long. It's simply time to accept that, even when he's not the problem, he's not the solution. Time to move on.
Adam Caplan, NFL insider, said on a recent livestream that his Raiders contacts have told him Carr has an accountability problem behind closed doors.
First of all, he wasn’t just saying this to get clicks or to stir the pot or anything. He said it on the Fantasy Points weekly livestream with Greg Cosell and John Hansen that averages less than 1000 viewers and is only available to people who pay for a subscription to the website. And immediately after he said it, he instantly regretted it and kinda tried to walk back what he said, like it wasn’t something he really should be saying publicly.
He started off by talking about how many NFL people he talks to around the league believe that Carr just doesn’t see the field well and also gets rattled very easily. That he has tremendous arm talent, is great at pre-snap reads, and can look fantastic any given week, but that once the ball is snapped, he’s kinda lost if his first read aren’t there. That he has a tendency to fixate on one read and leaves a ton of open throws on the field, especially longer passes, because it wasn’t who he thought the ball should be going to pre-snap.
Greg Cosell, possibly the best film analyst in the game right now who gives incredible unbiased insight all the time, also backed what Adam said and stated that his film study of Carr shows exactly that.
He then went into detail that his Raiders sources all talk about how Carr is a good guy, but that he doesn’t have great accountability. That in team film reviews, when coaches point out that he’s leaving throws on the field and missing all these open throws because he’s not scanning the whole field, that he has a tendency to always make excuses instead of admitting that he made a mistake and trying to learn from it. Lack of accountability is not a good trait for a leader.
I think everyone can agree that this team has a leadership problem, but it seems like a huge majority of this sub thinks that it’s all on the coaching and not….you know……the long term captain and player leader of the team.
This is now the 2nd year in a row where a new player in his first year with the team is calling out teammates and saying there’s an overall lack of accountability and effort from the team. Agholor said it last year, and now a f[raiders_icon]cking rookie, Deablo, is already calling people out about it this year.
That’s not just all on the coaching, Carr deserves blame for that too. Lack of accountability starts at the top, and if the QB of the team is always coming up with excuses for why he didn’t execute well, that starts happening in the rest of the team too. That would never happen under a Brady led team, even if the coaches sucked.
Look, I really like Carr. He’s a role model and a good guy and he’s a decent QB. But he’s not this elite QB being dragged down by a poverty franchise.
Yes, this organization sucks. Marky Mark is a role model and a great guy and I wish all wealthy people were like him, but yeah, he sucks at football decisions. He sucks at hiring head coaches and our head coaches always suck.
But let’s get real: Carr is not blameless in this situation. Credible sources are saying he has an accountability issue, and that has a big influence on the team, as we can see from Agholor and Deablo’s comments. Amazing film analysts are saying that he has fundamental flaws that explain why he’s such an incredibly inconsistent QB who has a 50/50 chance every week of either playing like Aaron Rodgers, or playing like replacement level starter/backup.
And it’s not even like it’s about the quality of team that he plays, sometimes he looks elite against a top defense, sometimes he looks like Nathan Peterman against a bottom 5 defense. It’s basically a coin flip every week on whether we get Baby Rodgers, the franchise QB with amazing arm talent, or West Coast Bortles, the replacement level bottom tier starter.
I just don’t understand why we can’t have nuance about Carr here. It’s either “nothing is ever his fault, it’s everyone else, Carr is an incredible QB,” or “Carr is horrible, he’s the reason we suck.”
This is not a Carr hate post. He doesn’t suck. But he’s not great either.
He is the Jon Gruden of QBs: flip flops between looking like one of the best at his position in the league and also inexplicably and bafflingly looking like one of the worst in the league at his position, and you never know which version you’re gonna get any given week.
And it all evens out to frustrating mediocrity that traps us in a cycle of getting our hopes up and then disappointing the shit out of us.
Surely no one could be so self absorbed and delusional that they would defend checking down a called Hail Mary?!
It’s simple math.. there’s 6… 7 defenders for 3-4 receivers. You can throw the ball up there for grabs or take the option underneath where we never see guys make it all the way to the end zone…
I’m with you here. This was a put up or shut up year and he hasn’t done enough. Time to move on. But, make no mistake, Stidham is not the answer.
I'm thinking the number of people that think he is approaches zero statistically though I'm sure a few may.
Stidham needs to start simply in order to bubble wrap Carr so his 2023 isn't guaranteed in yet another sadsack twist of fate. It doesn't have to be Stidham at all, it just cannot be Carr.
There is no upside from the risk of him getting nicked up.

I'm not even buying his good guy act either. It's about money to this dude. That's it.
But Josh's playcalling is shit. He's not scheming wrs open!! This is why people say execution matters. He's calling the right plays, someone isn't executing them correctly
I think they actually believe the hot should be schemed open like the defense and DC don't exist, relieving the quarterback of seeing the field and finding the open man.

Making reads and throwing to the open receiver is a preposterous and unreasonable demand!
Can we add the experiment Andre James also? He sucks. f[raiders_icon]ck, anyone but me see defensive players run right past him?
Another possible example of why I haven't a clue what roster folks are talking about when they keep talking about all the talent.
Where is it? I see a dodgy Oline. A one man Dline, bad linebackers, questionable at best safeties, generic CB's.
All I see talent wise is a running back, one wideout, a slot (that now is also lost but just a slot), and that is about it other than an injured receiving tightend.
There is a lack of depth EVERYWHERE.
Let's say Renfrow and Waller were up to par, all of our targets essentially work the same areas of the field.
This build is ridiculous.

James is f[raiders_icon]cking trash.
Alex Bars... who??! Where the f[raiders_icon]ck did this clown come from? He is WHIFFING several times a game, but hey he's always the first to help Carr/Jacobs up off the ground.
Elumenour has been TRASH all year but McFuckface keeps putting him out there
Parham is a rookie expected to hold up the entire right side by himself and he's failing so far
