NFL Trade Deadline
Ok maybe this doesn’t need its own thread but the deadline is 5 weeks away. I know the next couple weeks will determine if we are buyers but let’s say we get to 5-2 do we make a move?
I really wish we still had Jakobi here but it sounds like a few guys might be available…
Brian Thomas Jr
Marvin Harrison Jr
Jerry Jeudy
Thoughts?

we either release him before his guarantees kick in or we are screwed on the cap into the future...we can also restructure and add yr ot his deal but that doesn't help fernando

I know some of you disagree but im not making the vikings a legitimate super bowl contender for a late 3rd round pick. They need to pay at least a 2nd if not more.

Releasing doesnt help the cap. That bonus was guaranteed at signing. It would be a 10 million dead cap hit.mstrbass2000 wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2026 12:24 pm we either release him before his guarantees kick in or we are screwed on the cap into the future...we can also restructure and add yr ot his deal but that doesn't help fernando

What specifically do you think is fair then? Their 1st plus their 3rd? Their 1st plus their 2nd? I guess you can ask for the moon because if you dont ask, you'll never get it.Willmark wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2026 12:07 pm Yeah....as of righty now the Vikes pick is around Pick #30 of the 1st round. They would have to give up way more than that before I'd pull the trigger for what amounts to a early 2nd round pick.

I think he means we release him before his 2028 guarantees kick in...... which isn't even a choice, the contract was designed for Cousins to get released and be a free agent. But you're right that we will still owe $10 million next year unless we trade him before middle of tuesdayCruisin with Tooz wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2026 4:00 pm Releasing doesnt help the cap. I know it’s next to impossible, but there’s a window that we could trade him next year

Our current position with Cousins, was not even conceived when we signed him. No one could have predicted he would play this well, under a first year coach in another new system.
His contract has value, there is a built in 2 year extension, should the acquiring club want to exercise it.
My assumption when camp opened, was Kirk would play till approx week 14, assuming he stayed healthy, and it would be Fernando time. I wanted Mendoza to have a few games under his belt before next year.
I would trade him in a minute now. My ask would be a 1st and 7th in 2027. I would come off of that for a second and additional pick(s). Trading Cousins at week 9, prompts the Mendoza experiment 5 games ahead of time, contract is dumped and we get additional picks and in year, no one was expecting a playoff push

so releasing him or keeping him hurts the raiders, so what r we talking about then "trading him is the only answer" unless the plan is to keep him and make him richer sitting behind fernandoCruisin with Tooz wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2026 4:00 pm Releasing doesnt help the cap. The reasons to rebuff trade offers for Cousins:
1. If you believe the team culture would be negatively impacted by trading away one of the league passing leaders when the team still has a reasonable shot at the playoffs. This also depends upon the rest of the team believing that Mendoza isn't ready to win now - and we don't know what their views are on that.
2. If you value giving Mendoza more time to learn from the sidelines before thrusting him into the starting lineup.
3. If you value Cousins supporting Mendoza once Mendoza is ultimately inserted as starter, sometime after the bye week.
The cost of all that is $10 million in cash and cap plus whatever draft pick that Cousins would get in trade (there are wildly different estimates of what that pick might be). If someone is offering a 1st rounder...... cmon just do it. If the best you're looking at is a 5th - well Mendoza's development is probably worth more than that. If the Vikings already have a deal in principle with the Colts for Jones, then this all might be moot, because I don't think he has much value to anyone else.

That's also been the plan of the FO from the get go. They have states they want him to sit as much as possible. I believe there was a quote from Kubiak or Spytek that they said "in a perfect world the qb sits and learns", paraphrasing but it was along the lines of thatchucker wrote: Sun Nov 08, 2026 8:31 am The reasons to rebuff trade offers for Cousins:

Yep. We have all the leverage, they have none.Willmark wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2026 12:07 pm Yeah....as of right now the Vikes pick is around Pick #30 of the 1st round. They would have to give up way more than that before I'd pull the trigger for what amounts to a early 2nd round pick.
If they don't want to give enough for Cousins, that's fine because the guy has been good for our team and will continue to be.
If they're willing to pony up a 1st and 3rd, that's fine too because our shiny new QB would get on the field and be better prepared for next season.
The point is that we're fine either way while the Vikes are boned without giving up the farm for Cousins.

I would hope we are at least having conversations with teams. Bad teams should not leave a stone unturned when trying to rebuild a franchise. Also, none of us know what kind of conversations KK and Captain Kurk are having. I could potentially see a an agreement between the 2 where Kurk said he prefers to play meaningful games. I think they are that tight and respect each other enough that this will get done one way or the other if true. I could also see the other side of the spectrum where Kurt says he does not want to leave and KK assures him he is not.

Al Gamini say raiders playoff chance is 13-16%. Its a mistake to forgo a trade to chase such long odds or for 1/2 season of hand holding for Mendoza.. Take the pick if its at least a second.
