Should never have been cast as a starship captain. That whole show was miscast. A French captain when there isnt even a word in the French language that translates as "to win". A blind helmsman and a 14 year old navigator. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong with that? And then there's the Klingon security officer. Show was just too woke. The touchy feely psychobabble of Troi. And the real winner----the Saucer Section!!! Yay, now whenever we're in a jam, we can cut and run just like Emilio Largo in Thunderball. Perfectly apropos plot device for our French captain though. They couldnt even find a suitable role for their best character, Yar, so they kill her off with----a talking oil slick.
Anyway. RIP.
Anyway. RIP.

Good actor but apparently not much of a parent.
Listening to somebody who knew him today on the radio they said he had two children and more than one marriage but to the day he died, he had zero relationship with his kids.
On another note he was a serious stage actor and the Star Trek gig was beneath him but he believed it to only be a short, maybe 1 year run and he wanted the easy money. Turned out to last several years and then obviously opened other similar roles.
