You fail to work the progressions and practice progressing through them. How do you learn how to manage the speed of the game? You are on the field seeing the speed and learn to process faster.

The game may have changed but you learn by doing. You do not learn by being treated like you are a China doll. Do I think he has earned the right to be our starter? No, but he was always going to be our starter given his draft status. Would I start Cousins over him? Until that line can give a guy more than half a second, probably. But that is simply because if someone is going to get beat up nonstop I do not want that to be Mendoza.

And I quoted you because I am wrong on occasion and wanted to bask in the shadow of someone who is never wrong.

The kid is going to be just fine, yet these individuals are ready to jump ship because they are surprised there is a learning curve? I mean, preseason has hardly ever meant a damn thing, yet when it comes to Mendoza, it carries an immense amount of weight and tells all... Simply ridiculous.

Perfectly legit to be concerned and express why in a rational way but amusing to watch a few go full sandlot whining he isnt prime Tom Brady , Manning or Montana yet.

Mendo has the intellect, drive and tools to be great. Time will tell if he puts it all together. If he doesnt, he doesnt. But panicking now is just silly.

He does, at times. I think his internal clock is still a little bit fast so when he gets pressure he starts to rush and opens up his hips too early, causing his throws to sail a bit. More experience should fix this.

From what I can tell Kubiak is not dumbing anything down for him. He expects him to develop executing his offense and probably wont play him until that happens. Sometimes rookies get a reduced sets of plays and responsibilities to help them play better early on.

...was that a college thing too, or could it be in response to the pressure he has been under so far here? .....on a side note, I like the surprise being that his are is stronger than they thought, than the other......

He was not prone to throw the balls high in college. But he is still learning the pass rush speed at the next level and is being rushed more. Throwing high is the result and is not uncommon. As he gets comfortable, he will learn to take a bit off the balls and the balls will not sail high as much. Mendoza can make the throws, he just needs to settle into his role on the field. I am not concerned over some preseason games.

Is Fernando ready?

As Kubiak said, "theres so many details pre-snap.
Snap points, getting the protections set, communicating to the half back behind you, signaling to recievers before the ball is snapped, cadence, communication with the sideline, going into each series, to each position talking about each player thats coming. Talking about things he's looking for.
Then all of a sudden the whole picture changes and they're making adjustments on the fly and getting everyone on the same page.
So there's just so many things that have nothing to do with throwing a tight spiral or an accurate football that goes with being efficient.
Thats what great QBs do and its something a young QB like Fernando will keep getting better at by doing reps."

What goes into being ruthlessly efficient.

Remember its just preseason don't go completely insane over it. wait till the first 3-4 reg season games before losing your mind
Or the first 3-4 regular season games

heavyD wrote: Fri Aug 28, 2026 5:43 am Sure he hasn't looked great but preseason isn't really an indicator of regular season success. The team in general hasn't looked very good but there's a lot of moving parts with the 3rd coaching staff in the last three years. He's not landed in a situation like the Rams where the foundation is in place and training camp is pretty routine for most of the roster. Hopefully by the time he has to go in and play that the offense is operating at a higher level than the backups he's been playing with as he's going to need a little help.
Also considering our receivers wouldn’t make very many rosters league wide.

Obviously it would be more encouraging if Mendoza was lighting it up in preseason. However, it's not surprising or overly concerning that he has had his share of struggles. He'll keep working, they'll keep developing him, and hopefully we get the rest of the offense more sorted before it's time to start him. This certainly takes the pressure off the decision-makers and allows them to stick to their plan. We were never going to be a contender this season, so it's not a big deal for now.
