Interesting take and they could be right? Thing is Carlson is a FA and it appears if he was thought of as that good someone would have already signed him? I dunno.

Not a lot out there about why Gay was brought in to replace Carlson. Last year Gay's FG % was 73.9; Carlson's was 81.5. Both of them were below the league average of 85.6. Daniel had a longest kick of 60 and Matt a 56. Carlson was slipping a bit over the years but Gay's stats are not better than Carlson's. So perhaps it was just a money saving move? And maybe we'll get news of kicker tryouts in the near future. So many other player problems to solve, kicker has probably been kicked to the bottom of the pile. Also, they may have had higher hopes for Tokyo Toe than he has so far demonstrated. Could be there's still hope for him?

Personally, I was surprised and somewhat disappointed they let Carlson go.

Remember when Al would cut players only to re sign them for cheaper? I do not recall Carlsons contract but could this be similar?

Well, maybe. Carlson played out his contract in 2025. His last year he was paid $5,159,765. Matt Gay signed on for a one year deal at $1.6M. We need TT to work the kinks out and start kicking like he's in the NFL.

We have a cut list after Preseason week 1?

Defense, rookies excluded, start with Polo Mao and Koonce, useless

Offense line, was not impressed with the second teamers

Pretty obvious why Gay was signed. He kicked for our new special teams coordinator for 2.5 seasons and made over 90% of his kicks.

He hasn't been as succcessful since then though

If we are worried about the cost of a kicker, we have far greater problems.

Carlson will get hired mid season but not for as much money. There are younger, cheaper and stronger legs. I am concerned about our kicker spot though. It is a critical piece of an offense and can easily win or lose a couple of games for you.

Not worried, just basic business math

I think Carlson is better than both our guys and is definitely better than other guys who have jobs too. My guess is he’s kicking somewhere very early, probably week 1.

Bottom xtweet is 15 minute breakdown of several plays, some excellent by FM, some not so much.

Also featured are Jayden Daniels (year two), and vets Baker Mayfield and Joe Flacco (comes across very likeable). If you want to see the dedication of Kirk Cousins and the work he puts in off the field, check out season 1, which also features Mahomes, and Mariota. Season 2 also features Kirk Cousins (you'll see the qualities of leadership and personal accountability), along with Jared Goff and Joe Burrow. It's an entertaining program that gives you some insight on what it takes to be an NFL QB. It's not for the faint of heart and rookies are rarely truly ready for it.
I watched that a few weeks ago and was impressed with Kirk. There's a reason he's had many successful seasons with different teams. I also was very unimpressed with Cam Ward. I'm so glad the Raiders had the #1 pick a year later... Ward ain't it IMO

In hindsight, perhaps the PC year was, in the long run, more blessing than curse. It led to a number one pick, his mentor, and a young, innovative coach, but at the time, we just wanted wins (of course). Fingers crossed, we're moving in the right direction.
