I think with most things, there is a grey area. I do think some folks who say "Dogs are better than people" tend to have a difficult time maintaining human relationships.Xramfan wrote: Mon May 11, 2026 4:51 pm As a dog owner for my entire life and usually having more than one at a time, a very good friend of mine told me the same thing. As much as I love my pets, I’m reminded of a sociologist that made a compelling argument that those who “love their animals more than people” may well have strong narcissistic tendencies. One of his major points was that it was because an animal can’t truthfully tell you when you are wrong or when you are or being bad. One is loving something and worshipping something that is incapable of correcting you therefore never disappointing you. Just interesting conversation.
Again I love my dogs as much as anybody and will protect them from danger but I won’t equate them to human beings for better or worse. They are animals…..
At the same time I do agree with the sentiment, but I would amend it to read dog's and children are better than most human adults. The reason people are so disturbed when a dog or child is harmed is because they are inherently innocent, and trust you to care for them. While some folks might lean towards the narcissistic angle, I like to think that by and large the sentiment comes from a place of sympathy for those who can't defend themselves.

Are dogs better than most people? Yes. However, your own dog does not compare to your own child or loved one. I've lost a dog and it messed me up for a year or so. I got over it. If I ever lost someone extremely close to me unexpectedly (God forbid), I'd be screwed up for life. There is no comparison.

Dogs are the only animal on the planet that love you more than than love themselves.
Dogs have been with us for (at best guess right or) 20-40,000 years
Without them we are likely not having this conversation or it’s likely very different. That’s how impactful the domestication of the dog was to humans. Two species whose social traits meshed near perfectly.
So when people say “it’s just an animal!”
It is an animal, but one that is unlike any other animal on the face of the planet. No other animal has been domesticated and molded by man as much as dogs. It’s not even close.
A far distant second is horse and that gap is wide.
In short? Sure people can say animal, but that doesn’t tell the whole story of dogs.

When my dog, that I love very much, becomes unable to walk anymore due to his current struggle of bad hips, I’m gonna do him a favor and have him put down so he doesn’t suffer while knowing I gave him a great life.
However, I will not consider doing that for my wife or any of my kids.
If Ruggs had killed one of my kids, it would change me forever and as much as I like to think I could forgive him, I honestly doubt I could. It would be a forever thing.

I’ve had to do it four times and the last over my beagle grieves me to this day. I wrote two books about it, and it still didn’t fill the pain.Viper wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 5:50 am Absolutely agree.

I like you know the right thing to do for our four legged friends.
That doesn’t make it any easier.

I might get flack for this but after seeing several immediate family members and very close friends go through cancer, alzheimers/dementia, I absolutely think you should be able to have the decision to let them go just as we do with animals. The suffering that everyone goes through is too much. The wife and I both jokingly agree to "make it look like an accident". There's no reason to make any living being suffer through an uncurable disease and they should have a right to end it. My opinion of courseViper wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 5:50 am Absolutely agree.

The sentence has nothing to do with Nevada law. He was up for a lot worse charges but the police messed up chain of custody on the evidence so they went to a plea agreement instead.mstrbass2000 wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 7:39 am i agree, taking 2 lives and all you get is 3 yrs wtf is the matter with nevada law ??? henry ruggs should serve the full term before getting a 2nd chance

But wasn't the term of Ruggs sentence 10 years with being eligible for parole in 3 years?mstrbass2000 wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 7:39 am i agree, taking 2 lives and all you get is 3 yrs wtf is the matter with nevada law ??? henry ruggs should serve the full term before getting a 2nd chance
A lot of posts are angry about the sentence that was handed down. That was 3 years ago and in the past. Ruggs eligibility for parole was part of the sentence and I'm sure comes with criteria that must be met. I have no idea if he has met any or all of the criteria. I would think, if released on parole, it will include a list of restrictions - No driving a motor vehicle for a lengthy period of time, weekly testing for alcohol, community service, maybe even house arrest. Not being in jail does not mean he is free.

At the same time the law and justice are two separate things.
