Free Agency thread for Raiders and league-wide
Free agency opens March 11. CBS Sports has their top 50 ranking. No Raiders on the list. I am surprised at a couple rated high - Aaron Rodgers and Daniel Jones. Lots of wide receivers

Aidan O has been the best QB the Raiders have had the last three years. I don't think you could come up with a worse situation for a QB to have his first three years in the league than he has. He was the QB of the biggest point output in Raider history. Many different dynamics in that game, yes, still a fact. To say he's garbage is just untrue. Does he fit really well in the current system? I don't know. Gary Kubiak had statue Matt Schaub in the same system. He's not trash. He's had to navigate a trash situation though. The only victories against KC the last how many years has come via Aidan O'Connell under center. He very likely beats them a 3rd time if Pierce isn't a moron & kicks the field goal in KC rather than run another play

I would like it noted that the bolded statement in no way, shape, or form, includes me.chucker wrote: Tue Mar 24, 2026 6:24 pm I believe I've brought it up twice. Just to point out that you're no more an authority than others on here. We're all wrong plenty. You could be wrong about O'Connell too. The fact that I'm a mod doesn't mean I can't discuss that many of your "facts" aren't facts, they are opinions and predictions. Like everyone else's. And I don't think you were CLOBBERED, I think some people disagreed and most of them disagreed respectively. Which is kind of the point.

Ditto to everything here.chucker wrote: Tue Mar 24, 2026 3:55 pm I heard that Sam Darnold is a #3 at best - and it was said with absolute certainty. Since then he has had 2 4000+ yard, 14 win seasons and won a SB.
I don't think O'Connell is going to light anything up like that and I'm not convinced he's the right backup for the Raiders because he's never worked in this system, but he's a capable backup NFL QB. And he has been put in absolutely horrible situations since he entered the league.
Never in my wildest NFL dreams did I think Darnold was anything more than a back up. If that...

AOC is going to look fine as a backup behind a competent line and with good coaching.16 to 88 wrote: Tue Mar 24, 2026 9:39 pm Ditto to everything here.

Clearly Kubiak thinks he can work with AOC because the Raiders certainly haven’t gone out of their way to bring in competition for the backup position.

The offense put up 63 against the chargers with him at the helm one time.raider_kin wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 7:59 am AOC is going to look fine as a backup behind a competent line and with good coaching.
He's thrown 20 TDs in his 3 year Raider career under 3 HCs and 4 OCs.
Give him a fighting chance for goodness sake i agree.

And I don't think they should sign a b/u either. They should draft his competition with a late round pick tbey think can excel in the system.heavyD wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 8:08 am Clearly Kubiak thinks he can work with AOC because the Raiders certainly haven’t gone out of their way to bring in competition for the backup position.

I don't think some people have realistic expectations of what a back up actually is. AOC's fine as a back up for right now. This team is so full of holes that backup qb is should be one of the least priorities we should be worrying about. If they find a vet familiar with the system that's willing to come here and be a place holder, great sign him. If not then AOC is probably going to the guy

This 100%. To some here anyone who isn't a good starter should automatically be a 3rd string or out of the league.Hellbound wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 9:24 am I don't think some people have realistic expectations of what a back up actually is. Not hating on Aidan, but I have seen zero improvement in his game. He has no pocket awareness which should have been fixable. He has warts in his game (runs like he has a steamer in his diaper for instance) that are not fixable, but who doesn't. I think he is a poor mans backup at best. This pains me to say, because at one point I believed in him. I thought having a camp where he was the starter (or close to it) would promote growth in his game that never came into fruition. We would be foolish not to draft another back up QB (especially with the amount of picks we have).

He didn't show improvement because he had nothing to improve in.RI RAIDER wrote: Wed Mar 25, 2026 9:41 am Not hating on Aidan, but I have seen zero improvement in his game. 3 years in the league and
every year a new HC.
From the Perkins system, McDaniel
To the, idk system, Pierce,
to the Getsy/Turner system under Pete.
Nobody knew what the f[raiders_icon]ck was going on and it showed.
Im a Aidan believer for backup.

Im kind of surprised we didnt try to add Flacco, he would have been perfect as a mentor for Mendoza.
