Five Things to Know About Davis Webb
https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/da ... -candidate
Webb has been coaching for three years and is already getting NFL head coach interviews. That's a meteoric rise in the profession. At 30 years old, Webb would tie Sean McVay as the youngest person to be hired as a head coach in the NFL's modern era. McVay was an offensive coordinator for three years before the Los Angeles Rams hired him as their head coach in 2017. Three years later, McVay became the youngest head coach to reach the Super Bowl. Three years after that, he became the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl. The Rams' "gamble" paid off. Webb's first coaching job was as the Denver Broncos' quarterbacks coach in 2023. After two years in that role, Sean Payton promoted him to pass game coordinator. Webb has helped young Bo Nix become one of the NFL's best young quarterbacks. In his second season, Nix has thrown for the eighth-most passing yards in the league (3,931), and Denver is the AFC's No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs. Nix said Webb is "underrated." "He's always prepared me extremely well, especially from the get-go," Nix said. "He played the position and knows what it's like to walk into a game. He prepares me on a very good level and we're always ready for the task at hand."

A 6-foot-5 quarterback, Webb was a third-round pick of the New York Giants in 2017, just one year before Lamar Jackson was drafted. He played six NFL seasons. Webb bounced around as a player, going from the Giants to the Jets, then three years with the Buffalo Bills, where he made one appearance, and then back to the Giants. In his final season in 2022, Webb made his first and only career start in a Week 18 regular-season finale when the Giants rested starter Daniel Jones. Webb threw one touchdown and ran for another in a 22-16 loss to the Eagles. Webb could have continued to pursue a playing career, but he walked away to start coaching.

According to The Athletic, when Webb was with the Bills as the third-string quarterback behind Josh Allen, Buffalo's coaches were so impressed with Webb that they asked him to consider retiring to become their quarterbacks coach. Webb opted to play one more season in the NFL (with the Giants), but it spoke volumes about how the Bills felt about his coaching future, knowledge of the game, and relationship with Allen.

While Webb is young, he's soaked up a lot of football knowledge. Webb's college career started at Texas Tech, where he played for Kliff Kingsbury for three seasons. Webb started as the backup to Baker Mayfield and ended as the backup to Patrick Mahomes. In between (2014) was when he got his shot as a starter, but he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in his eighth game and was replaced by Mahomes. Davis transferred to Cal and had his breakout season, throwing for 4,285 yards and 37 touchdowns. He finished his college career with an outlandish 137.1 quarterback rating. In the NFL, Webb played with Eli Manning, Josh McCown (now the quarterbacks coach in Minnesota), rookie Sam Darnold, Allen, and others. He was mostly coached by Brian Daboll in New York. One of the NFL's top offensive coaches, Sean Payton hired Webb to come work in Denver after getting strong recommendations from "a bunch of different coaches." Broncos General Manager George Paton said Webb “blew them away” during the interview process and that he is "poised beyond his years." Webb has spent the past three years learning from Payton, Joe Lombardi, and John Morton, and he coached veteran Russell Wilson in his first year.

Webb knew he wanted to go into coaching since he was a little boy. Webb's father coached Texas high school football for more than three decades. As a kid, he drew his dad's team's plays on notecards. Webb was basically a coach even when he was playing in the NFL, evidenced by the Bills' request to have him be their quarterbacks coach. "Really hard worker, and he takes it seriously," Lombardi said in 2023, per DenverBroncos.com. "He's young, and he's just starting out as a coach. With his background, the coaches he's been with and the experience of being a quarterback where you're really responsible for knowing what everyone's doing, I think he has a really good base. He's good at building relationships with the guys that he coaches, so I certainly see a bright future for him in the coaching profession."

Just Kubiak in for an interview today. It in person of course because of the rules. But wonder if they get McDaniels in for an interview along with Harbaugh. Doubt Harbaugh would want the job and we’ll want him, but makes sense to talk to him

Just my opinion, but Harbaugh seems destined for NY or Miami.

I think he goes the the Gmen. They actually could go from zero to hero next season. Dart looks like the real deal (if he can stop taking big hits), Cam is a beast, Robinson came out of nowhere and is a stud who compliments Nabers perfectly. They have a few nice pieces on D and solid picks for the upcoming season.

GoodTimeCharlie wrote: Thu Jan 08, 2026 6:48 pm Big Al was 39 when he hired 32 year old Madden to HC. I’m all for a youth movement. No more dusting off cobwebs before we make a hire. In the case of Pierce, dumb should be avoided as well.

For information’s sake, Big Al was 49 when when he hired a 42 year old Tom Flores.

Some of you, or if the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree, your Dads, must have hated the Madden hire. Too young, too fat, needed a haircut the f’n hippy.
I was just making a point that Madden wasn't on his own. Davis was a former coach, had strong opinions on the day to day, and was deeply involved in all facets of the game.

I like the later list that showed ages of first time coaches. 30 is very young. Some have grown up by then, many have not. Look at Kiffin versus Gruden. Kiffin was a bright guy but did not have the maturity to lead an organization (and is still a total douche). Gruden clearly had the intangibles.

I would prefer a young guy who will be here for the next 2o years. I don't know anything about any of these candidates. I suspect no one on here knows either. What are they really like day to day? That's Spytek's job to determine.

Just as an observation. It seems players want only Alpha males to be their head coach, beta males who are smart just don't do well over time. McDonald, McVay, etc just can't get full control over the players and if the team doesn't win right away they lose the locker room and shit falls apart quickly.

Key is to find an alpha who is also smart. Also players seems to like older coaches who have a track record.

Its just how players are wired I guess.

A coach can't make players better but he can make the most out of what is there. I think Vrabel in New England is the most recent example.

I think Bum Phillips said "He'll take his'n and beat your'n or take your'n and beat his'n". Can't recall who he was talking about.

You referred to McVay and McDonald as though they are coaches who have lost the locker room and don't do well over time. I have no idea how you could come to that conclusion. I'll take beta McVay any day of the week thank you.

I don’t know if I’ve studied the “coaching-carousel” more intently. I imagine it has a lot to do with having the 1st pick.

Updated with Harbaugh…
