no, the rookie is not competing for the number one job. Very rare that a rookie is asked to be the top option. Very rare. Thornton is competing to be a number two and that is even in question.

As many others have said, it's not that he's asking for a trade. That's just the business. It's the timing that's the problem. What is it, less than two weeks before the season starts?chucker wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 5:59 am It's hard to say who's "at fault" in this without knowing how much Meyers is demanding for a contract and what the Raiders are offering. It definitely sucks that the relationship has reached this point though.
He could've done this before camp so that he could be on his way and we could have gotten Bech more reps in the system. I don't think Bech is going to amount to anything, but his presence with the first team this entire time would've been good for everyone. I don't know how Meyer's sudden announcement is anything but bad for the locker room.

History tells us Thornton will struggle to crack 500 yards on the year. If he ends up being our #1 WR as a 4th round rookie you're talking about the literal best case scenario. He'll have his utility in the offense but rookie receivers outside of the 1st round so rarely produce.
If Geno plays to his average and gets around 3600-3700 yds passing I think the breakdown will be something like
Bowers - 1200
Tucker - 550
Cooper - 500
Mayer - 400
Bech - 350
Thornton - 400
Running Backs - 300

You don't think the players and front office knew he was looking for a raise? Do you think the players are raising even one hair of an eyebrow over this development? Myers is using the only leverage he has at the most tactical moment for him to try and finagle a new deal. More power to him.Opoponax50 wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 8:43 am As many others have said, it's not that he's asking for a trade. That's just the business. It's the timing that's the problem. I think that can also be part of "it's just business", when the clock gets near midnight things come to a head and get done. You know doing the book report the night before it's due. He's not alone in the league here and some have got that 11th hour deal, will he??? Either way, it's just business. If he doesn't sign and plays it's us talking about it one way, if he sits and doesn't play that costs him and probably us talking about it more and next man up. But it's all just business.Opoponax50 wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 8:43 am As many others have said, it's not that he's asking for a trade. That's just the business. It's the timing that's the problem. Interesting. So is it (A) Let's get what we can for a disgruntled player now and use Cooper and our young wideouts; or (B) End up settling a pay raise for Meyers (maybe an extension or maybe not) and use Cooper mixed in with the young guys and we have two good vets to help the young guys.raiders93 wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 8:00 am I don’t see jakobi moving at this point. If the wheels fall off this team early, a move at the deadline makes sense. He hasn’t held out though so it seems like we probably don’t have a ton of pressure to move him. This could just be a tactic on his end to expedite a deal so the headline goes away.
I don’t think the cooper thing is a jakobi replacement. I think if anything he’s cheap and probably more reliable then the guys not named jakobi. At this point Tucker hasn’t really proven anything and Thornton and bech are rookies. Cooper and meyers feels like a decent starting two and the 3rd guy can rotate between Thornton, Tucker, and bech.
I will bet the (A) as I don't think the new regime is happy about Meyers attitude as they try to turn this franchise around. They settled with Kolton Miller in the off-season (actually at the end of July) but could not with Meyers.

Apparently the league isn’t as high on Meyers as his agent seems to think.
Meyers reminds me of another Myers, Brandon Myers. Put up good stats because we had little other options on offense, when allowed to go elsewhere, proved to not be as good as some thought. Jakobi is an average WR with good hands, that’s about it.- These users gave a High Five to the author Corleone for the post (total 4):

Hes rock solid, really good #2 but hes not a game changer. He doesn't force defenses to game plan for him, double him or adjust anything. If Adams didn't demand a trade hed have had another 750 yards or so with low touchdown numbers. Id prefer to sign him to a reasonable extension but lets not over rate him because of the absolute crap we trotted out at receiver last year.

Since he had the best drop rate, lets say he has great hands.Corleone wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 10:59 am Apparently the league isn’t as high on Meyers as his agent seems to think.

I think plenty of teams would love to have him as their #2 WR but it sounds like he wants to get paid WR1 money or close to that which complicates matters. Anything could happen between now and Nov. 4th depending on how the season unfolds. They could reach a contract agreement, they could just play out the season, or he could be traded. None of those scenarios would surprise me.

You don't think this throws the whole receiver corp and Geno Smith into discombobulation?Trainnvain wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 8:58 am You don't think the players and front office knew he was looking for a raise? The dude was out there taking reps from other players. It's at best a dick move. So sure, more power to being a dick.

Play the year.
Amari is here for the year.
Plus, there is Tucker and a couple others so then we will see what Jakobi has to bargain with as my opinion is we need to keep him. But if he stinks, then he is gone after this year.
